2021 was a big year for Land Rover, with its new Defender proving to be a popular hit. The British off-road brand will be looking to build upon that momentum with some updated vehicles in 2022.
Last year (2021) was a watershed year for Land Rover, with the revived Defender four-wheel drive spending a full year on sale. And perhaps unsurprisingly, it’s already risen to the top of the British brand’s sales chart in Australia.
While it still feels fresh, Land Rover is still doing some shuffling and fiddling with the Defender line-up. Some of these changes have been forced upon the manufacturer, because of the ongoing semiconductor shortage. Otherwise, it is looking to streamline its offering where possible, and focus more attention on the more popular variants.
Along with a wide range of smaller changes, the short-wheelbase Defender 90 loses its least expensive D200 diesel engine option. The cheapest ticket into the Defender range is still via the P300 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine, but the diesel range will now start with a more expensive and more powerful D250 powertrain.
But for those wanting ultimate power bragging rights – and have pockets deep enough to order – then the P525 Defender V8 will be at the top of their list, continuing on from its mid-2021 launch (with subtle changes). This 5.0-litre supercharged V8 makes 386kW and 625Nm, enough to propel the off-roader from 0-100km/h in only 5.2 seconds (90) or 5.4 seconds (110).
This is the most expensive Defender variant, costing $215,480 before on-road costs for the short wheelbase Defender 90 V8, and $220,530
before on-road costs for the Defender 110 V8.While the Defender has no doubt stolen the limelight over the last two years, the Land Rover Discovery is also in line for some updates during 2022.
Model Year 2023 examples of the Land Rover Discovery – which will be available in April 2022 – will include a wireless charging pad and Land Rover’s Activity Key, along with some small tweaks to the model lineup. These changes come after Land Rover added its new range of inline-six ‘Ingenium’ petrol and diesel engines, and updated the infotainment to the new ‘Pivi Pro’ system in late 2020.
