It’s the year of electrification for Kia Australia, with the launch of two new electric cars and up to three hybrids due by the end of 2022.
After Hyundai launched a slew of new products in 2021, it is the turn of sister brand Kia to unleash its all-new or updated model offensive on Australian showrooms – after introducing four new models (Carnival, Stonic, Niro and Sportage) and a range of updates/new variants in 2021.
Following the launch of the new Sportage in November, Kia will complete its medium SUV range with the second-from-flagship SX+ variant, due in showrooms in January. There’s still no word on an Australian launch for the Sportage Hybrid (though Kia Australia remains interested).
However, the vehicle headlining the Korean brand’s 2022 calendar will arrive in February or March, the new EV6 electric SUV, riding on a new dedicated electric vehicle platform shared with the in-demand Hyundai Ioniq 5.
Full pricing and standard equipment details are yet to be confirmed, though the car maker has announced that base and GT-Line variants of the EV6 will be offered in Australia at launch, both with long-range 77.4kWh batteries, and a choice of rear- or all-wheel drive configurations.
Due to arrive in the first quarter of the year (January to March) is a ‘self-charging’ Toyota-style hybrid version of the Sorento large SUV – following the plug-in hybrid launched in September 2021.
In the second half of 2022, Kia will launch the new-generation Niro electrified small SUV (due in the third quarter, between July and September), along with a facelifted version of the popular Seltos small SUV (possibly with a hybrid option), and a 430kW/740Nm, high-performance GT version of the EV6 – though this could slip into early 2023.
