Hybrid SUVs and high-performance hatchbacks are the headlines for Honda as it seeks to put a tumultuous 2021 behind it.
For Honda, 2021 has been a year to forget. The Japanese brand made the controversial move to a non-negotiable, fixed-price business model which it says will make it easier for consumers to get a good deal, but instead saw sales plummet more sharply in 2021 (down 40 per cent) after big falls in 2020 (down 34 per cent) and 2019 (down 15 per cent).
Honda closed out 2021 announcing the axing of the long-running Odyssey people mover and dramatically repositioning its once-popular Civic small car, adding equipment and increasing the starting price by $16,200 to $47,200 drive-away.
In 2022, a hybrid version of the Civic will arrive, although it’s unclear whether this variant will share with the 96kW 1.5-litre petrol/electric powertrain from the HR-V small SUV, or opt for a more powerful powertrain possibly shared with the 2023 Honda CR-V mid-size SUV.
The big news for Honda in 2022 centres on Honda’s SUV portfolio, beginning with an all-new HR-V small SUV arriving in April with a choice of petrol and hybrid powertrains. The HR-V range will start with a variant powered by a 87kW/142Nm 1.5-litre non-turbocharged petrol engine driving the front wheels through a continuously variable transmission (CVT).
An e:HEV hybrid drivetrain will also be offered, pairing a version of the same engine with two electric motors to deliver a combined 96kW and 253Nm, and a WLTP combined fuel consumption claim of 5.4 litres per 100km.
We should also see the arrival of Honda’s new performance hero, the Honda Civic Type R in the second half of 2022. Rumours abound of an AMG A45-rivalling 300kW petrol-electric powertrain linked to an all-wheel-drive system, although this would be quite a step up from the current model’s 228kW/400Nm turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol engine.
There is also a slim chance the all-new 2023 Honda CR-V medium SUV will sneak in before Christmas, although Honda Australia is saying nothing at this early stage.
