2022 Cupra new cars

Volkswagen’s sporty Spanish sibling will reach Australia this July, with a choice of one hatchback and two SUVs. An electric hot hatch will follow by the end of the year.

Australian hot hatch and SUV buyers will be presented with a new brand to consider in 2022: Cupra.

The performance arm of Spanish mainstream car maker Seat – itself a member of the Volkswagen Group, positioned between Volkswagen and Skoda – the Cupra marque will launch in Australia in July 2022 (a one to four-month delay from initial expectations).

Three models will be offered at launch: the Leon small hatchback, and two SUVs, the Ateca and Formentor – the lattermost of which is exclusive to Cupra, and isn’t available in a standard Seat variant overseas.

Offering a choice of 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engines and plug-in hybrid systems, prices will range from the low to mid-$40,000s before on-road costs for the entry-level Leon 140TSI hatch, rising to the mid-$60,000s for the range-topping Formentor plug-in hybrid. The brand will operate through an ‘agency’ model, with fixed, non-negotiable prices and pop-up Cupra stores scattered around high-traffic retail precincts. A five-year/unlimited-kilometre warranty will be standard, with servicing to be conducted through selected Volkswagen and Skoda dealers.

Joining the line-up late in the fourth quarter of 2022 (November or December) will be the Cupra Born electric car – one example of which has just arrived in Australia for local testing and software calibration.
