We will see more new Chevrolets on Australian roads next year as General Motors Specialty Vehicles (GMSV) ramps up in its second full year of operations in the wake of the Holden closure.
US car giant General Motors will ramp up local conversions – via the Walkinshaw Automotive Group – of its Silverado pick-ups next year, spread across the entry-level Trail Boss and flagship LTZ models.
While sales projections are yet to be confirmed, GMSV reportedly wants to close the gap to rival Ram, which has had runaway success in Australia and outsells the Chevrolet pick-up by almost two-to-one.
The factory-built right-hand-drive Chevrolet Corvette sports car continues to trickle through in limited numbers, with the first batch already sold.
But we could also see the high-performance Chevrolet Corvette Z06 (revealed here) sneak into showrooms in late 2022 or early 2023. Pricing and further details are yet to be announced.
A hybrid “E-Ray” version of the Corvette is expected to be available in the US, but it is unclear if such a model would be sold in Australia – though right-hand-drive prototypes have been caught on camera.
Although the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 pick-up line-up has recently been expanded in Australia, it’s unclear if the new ZR2 off-road version (pictured below) will make it to Australia.
The Chevrolet Silverado 1500 ZR2 carries over the 6.2-litre V8 and 10-speed auto from the standard model, but gains off-road tyres, off-road suspension, and front and rear differential locks, as well as a premium interior now available across the US-market Silverado range.
But the new 13.4-inch infotainment screen could rule it out from Australia given the new moulds required for the dashboard.
Fingers crossed GMSV can find a work-around (or a way to use the regular dash that has already been tooled by the Walkinshaw Automotive Group for right-hand drive).
GMSV has also been kicking the tyres on the idea of bringing the Chevrolet Tahoe to Australia, because the ingredients for the conversion are almost identical to the Silverado pick-up on which it is based.
The Chevrolet Tahoe is of particular interest given the local sales success of large vehicles such as the Nissan Patrol and Toyota LandCruiser. However, the Chevrolet Tahoe is yet to be confirmed locally.
