Meet the Korean luxury brand’s new flagship sedan – but it won’t come to Australia.
The 2022 Genesis G90 has been revealed in South Korea, but there are “no current plans” to bring the new sedan to Australia.
The second generation of the luxury brand’s flagship limousine, the new G90 is Korea’s rival for the BMW 7 Series, Mercedes-Benz S-Class and Audi A8, with its ’90’ designation signifying its place at the top of the Genesis line-up (above the G80 and GV80).
The new model dons the “
most elegant interpretation of the brand’s design philosophy of Athletic Elegance yet,” Genesis says, with a more stately take on the G80 and GV80’s design themes. The central front ‘Crest Grille’ – incorporating two G-Matrix patterns, for a 3D effect – is flanked by ultra-slim ‘Two-Line’ LED headlights, said to be the thinnest ever fitted to a Genesis, incorporating ‘Micro Lens Array’ technology.
Two sharp body lines, flush door handles and an angular window surround lead eyes to the rear where the Genesis brand’s twin-stripe light signature is seen in a pair of light bars stretching across the boot lid, with tapering main tail-light housings and ‘GENESIS’ script between them.
Other highlights include available 20-inch alloy wheels, a clamshell bonnet, and a new engraved front badge design that’s said to be 80 per cent thinner than those before it.
Available in certain markets will be a long-wheelbase model, with an additional 190mm of sheetmetal between the axles. Distinguishing features between it and standard variants include an exclusive 20-inch wheel design, chrome B-pillar and window surrounds, and unique front and rear bumper designs.
Spy photos suggest the interior will be home to two large screens for infotainment and instrumentation, plus a two-spoke steering wheel, premium materials, and an available tan leather option.
No details of engines or dimensions have been confirmed, however it’s widely expected the current model’s 5.0-litre naturally-aspirated ‘Tau’ V8 will be axed – the final application of the Hyundai group’s last petrol V8 – in favour of the smaller 3.5-litre twin-turbocharged V6 seen in the G80 and GV80, developing 279kW and 530Nm.
Whether an electric model will be offered isn’t clear, as while Genesis has committed to switching its entire range to all-electric or fuel-cell power by the end of the decade, the G90 will likely be in its third generation once 2030 arrives.
The 2022 Genesis G90 is expected to launch in South Korea within the coming months, however Australia won’t follow.
“We have no current plans to bring the new G90 sedan to Australia, our focus will remain on our current model range which consists of two sedans (G70 & G80) and two SUVs (GV70 & GV80). However next year this focus will shift to our new portfolio of EVs, we plan to launch three all-electric cars locally in 2022 (GV60, Electrified GV70 and Electrified G80), with more to come,” a Genesis Australia spokesperson told Drive.
