Designed and built by custom car guru, George Barris, the V8-powered coffin dragster is one of just five produced.
Long before Armageddon and Deep Impact, black and white TV sets around the globe offered duelling ‘horror’ themed sitcoms. One one side of the fence sat The Addams Family, and on the other, The Munsters.
The Munster family of Herman, Lily, Eddie, Marilyn and Grandpa, got about 1960s prime-time in ‘The Munster Coach’, a customised 1926 Model-T Ford hotrod hearse, until that is, Herman lost it in a race (looking at you Brian O’Connor plot point).
To win it back, Grandpa constructed this; the 1964 Drag-u-la Coffin dragster. And if any of that either makes sense, or rekindles fond memories, you can now re-live (or should that be re-animate) your cherished childhood with one of five Dragula hotrods created for the show.
Built using a real coffin by custom-car legend George Barris, the Drag-u-la features a 289ci (4.7-litre) Ford Mustang V8 with twin four-barrel carburettors (using ram-air intake scoops). The seat is mounted around the rear differential housing and the ‘car’ uses giant Firestone racing slicks.
To be offered at the Mecum Auction at Kissimmee Florida in January 2022, the Dragula is one of five produced and noted as being the most authentic in existence. Is it accompanied by supporting documentation and autographs from Barris Kustoms and stars of the TV show.
The Dragula hot rod has no reserve price, but if recent ‘Hollywood’ connected car auctions are anything to go by, this should attract a bidding frenzy that might just wake the dead.
If you’re keen, here’s the episode featuring the drag race…
