One of Australia’s cheapest utes has been hit with a massive price rise as demand among tradies outstrips supply of new workhorse vehicles.
The Toyota HiLux Workmate – one of Australia’s cheapest utes – has been hit with a massive price rise.
The cheapest model in the Toyota HiLux range has shot up to $28,990 drive-away, a long way from its previous low of $22,990 drive-away and the most expensive price since this generation went on sale in 2015.
The Toyota HiLux petrol manual 4×2 model with a dropside tray is commonly referred to as the “traffic controller” model given its popularity among road workers, construction companies, tradies, and delivery drivers.
After ranging in price from $22,990 drive-away and $23,990 drive-away between 2017 and 2018 – before climbing to $24,990 throughout most of 2018 – the base-model Toyota HiLux has risen by $4000 in the last three years.
After switching between $26,990 drive-away and $27,990 drive-away throughout most of 2020 and 2021, the price of the Toyota HiLux Workmate base model increased to $28,990 drive-away at the start of October 2021 (see below).
This is the dearest this model has been since it was introduced in current-generation form six years ago.
Although the core vehicle has not changed much in that time, it now has extra technology such as a digital speed display, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, autonomous emergency braking, radar cruise control and GPS vehicle tracking.
Despite the price hike, the base-model Toyota HiLux remains Australia’s top-selling 4×2 ute, and is crucial to the Toyota HiLux’s lead over the Ford Ranger in the outright sales race – when 4×2 and 4×4 models are combined.
