Customer deliveries of the mid-engine supercar are due to commence Down Under before the end of this year.
The right-hand-drive Chevrolet C8 Corvette is one step closer to Australian showrooms, with a factory-built test vehicle set to join the Victorian traffic imminently.
The low-slung supercar – which Drive understands is a bright ‘Torch Red’ 3LT convertible – has been imported for local engineering validation, ahead of the first customer deliveries slated for later this year.
“This is a significant milestone for GMSV and while we would have loved to have celebrated with more fanfare, we have had to adjust our plans in light of Covid-19 and lockdown restrictions,” Joanne Stogiannis, director of GMSV, said.
“It is a doubly-exciting time for Corvette fans in Australia and New Zealand, as later this month our right-hand-drive C8 Corvettes are due to go into regular production at the famed Bowling Green Plant in Kentucky.”
A 6.2-litre V8 will send 369kW/637Nm to the rear wheels via an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission in all locally delivered examples, allowing the 0-100km/h sprint to be completed in around three seconds.
Pricing will start from $145,000 before on-road costs for the entry-level 2LT coupe variant, and top out at $189,900 for the flagship Carbon Edition coupe.
The sale of factory-backed Corvettes in Australia was announced in July 2019, however the project been hampered by various delays, likely including the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
Production for the Australian market will commence later in September 2021, ahead of first deliveries later this year.
