Maserati’s flagship four-door looks set to add a more practical five-door variant, according to an overseas report.
Despite a name that literally means ‘four-door’, the Maserati Quattroporte could be adding a new five-door wagon version for its next generation.
That’s according to reports from Spanish publication Motor.es, which claims that, alongside the traditional Quattroporte sedan, Maserati is also working on a lifestyle wagon.
Rather than adopting the technically-correct Cinqueporte name, the report suggests the wagon is under development as the Quattroporte SW.
While high-spec luxury wagons are something of a rarity, with brands like Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Audi sticking to sedans for their respective flagship limos, it’s believed that Maserati is aiming to emulate the success of the Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo wagon.
A computer-generated imagining of the new model produced by Motor.es points to a fastback-style wagon, rather than one purely focussed on practicality, in the same way the Panamera Sport Turismo and now-discontinued Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Brake put form ahead of function.
With a long lead-up until the production version of the 2024 Quattroporte debuts, the Quattroporte SW is described as being “in a very early stage of development” meaning the intel from Motor.es could be patchy at best, and subject to change.
While Maserati has never officially offered a Quattroporte wagon, various coachbuilt examples have appeared over the generations (pictured below), hinting at at least some demand for a long-roof version of Maserati’s flagship sedan.
The report claims petrol-electric hybrid and plug-in hybrid options will make up the powertrain range at the 2024 Quattroporte’s launch – though specifics of which engines in Maserati’s stable will be used weren’t given.
A flagship, all-electric variant will arrive in 2025, wearing the brand’s ‘Folgore’ (or ‘lightning’) branding.
The Quattroporte sedan and SW Folgore would be joined by fully-electric versions of the upcoming GranTurismo and GranCabrio, along with the next-generation Levante and Grecale SUVs. The MC20 supercar is also in line for an electric version.
