Ineos Grenadier arrives in Australia for testing, 2022 launch likely

Designed and funded by petrochemical giant Ineos, the upcoming retro four-wheel-drive will take on Toyota’s LandCruiser 70 Series Down Under.

The Ineos Grenadier – a British-built off-roader inspired by the original Land Rover Defender – was spied over the weekend on a shipping pallet at Melbourne’s Tullamarine Airport.

Finished in white and red, the vehicle is fitted with front bash plates, tow hooks, axle-to-axle running boards, a snorkel, and rear ladder. Austrian licence plates feature at both ends, given development of the vehicle is being conducted by Austrian engineering firm Magna Steyr.

A spokesperson for Ineos in Australia was unable to comment on the sighting, however Drive understands the off-road SUV is likely here for hot weather testing ahead of the first local customer deliveries in 2022 or 2023.

Two engine options will initially be available in the Ineos Grenadier, both of which are built and supplied by BMW.

A 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six petrol engine sends 210kW/450Nm to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission, while a diesel variant of the same displacement and layout produces 185kW/550Nm.

Pricing and specifications for the vehicle are yet to be revealed for Australia. However, unconfirmed online reports suggest it will be pitched as a premium competitor to the Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series, which is priced from $71,500 before on-road costs locally in GXL guise.
