Subaru’s second-generation sports coupe will arrive early next year, priced from $38,990 plus on-road costs – an increase of $3720.

  • 2022 Subaru BRZ pricing and specifications
  • Priced from $38,990 to $43,990 before on-road costs
  • Manual models lack fuel suite of advanced safety tech
  • Automatic transmission is $3800 dearer than the manual
  • 18-inch wheels, 8.0-inch touchscreen, LED headlights standard

Australian pricing and specifications for the 2022 Subaru BRZ sports coupe have been announced ahead of showroom arrivals in January 2022.

The new model is the first new Subaru BRZ in nine years, and only the second generation of Subaru’s joint-venture sports car – a twin to the Toyota GR 86, local pricing for which is expected to be announced later this year.

In details released today, the new BRZ will start from $38,990 plus on-road costs, an increase of $3720 over the outgoing, entry-level BRZ ($35,270 before on-road costs).

The initial batch due in early 2022 will consist of 500 cars, with pre-orders now open on Subaru’s website. Customers are being asked to make a refundable $1000 deposit through their preferred Subaru dealer, or the Subaru Australia website.

The first shipments of the new BRZ are due in late December for test drives, ahead of deliveries in early 2022.

With the $3720 price rise comes an all-new engine developing more power and torque than its predecessor, a stiffer and safer chassis, larger wheels and tyres, a reworked interior, and a range of new advanced safety technologies (most of which are limited to automatic variants).

Adjusted for inflation, the 2022 Subaru BRZ is about $4000 cheaper than the original BRZ at launch in 2012, which retailed for $37,150 before on-road costs at the time, or about $43,000 in today’s terms, according to the Reserve Bank’s inflation calculator.

Powering all Australian-delivered 2022 BRZ coupes is a new 2.4-litre naturally-aspirated, horizontally-opposed four-cylinder ‘boxer’ engine, developing approximately 173kW and 250Nm – sent to the rear wheels through a six-speed manual transmission as standard or, for an additional $3800, a six-speed automatic with paddle shifters and Sport mode.

Performance figures are yet to be confirmed, however the Subaru BRZ’s twin, the Toyota GR 86, claims to cover the 0-100km/h dash in 6.3 seconds.

Standard equipment on the entry-level car (badged BRZ Coupe) includes 18-inch alloy wheels with Michelin tyres (rather than the 17-inch wheels and tyres standard in Japan), an 8.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and satellite navigation, cloth seats, dual-zone climate control, auto LED headlights, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. The complete list of standard inclusions is listed at the bottom of this story.

Automatic transmission adds paddle shifters, plus a range of advanced safety features including forward and reverse autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and high-beam assist.

The flagship BRZ Coupe S (formerly known as the Premium) costs an additional $1200, and adds heated front seats, and leather-accented and “Ultrasuede” upholstery.

Available exterior colours include Crystal White Pearl, Ice Silver Metallic, Magnetite Grey Metallic, Crystal Black Silica, Sapphire Blue Pearl (new), Ignition Red (new), and the hero WR Blue Pearl.
