Nissan’s all-new small SUV arrives early next year with active safety technology and LED headlights standard across the range – but prices are expected to rise.

The 2022 Nissan Qashqai will arrive in Australian showrooms in early 2022 with a wide active safety suite as standard, a new turbocharged engine and, by the end of 2022, a hybrid option.
Four variants of Nissan’s new small SUV will be offered in Australia, spanning from the entry-level Qashqai ST to the flagship Ti – all equipped with notably longer lists of standard equipment, with auto LED headlights, an Apple CarPlay and Android Auto-equipped touchscreen, a digital instrument display, and a near-complete suite of active safety systems.
Pricing is yet to be announced, however the new Qashqai’s larger body (in all directions), new architecture and increased standard equipment levels are likely to see prices rise by a few thousand dollars over the outgoing automatic model, priced from $30,590 before on-road costs – potentially approaching the $35,000 mark.
The price of entry to the wider Qashqai range is set to increase even further, following the axing of the price-leading six-speed manual variant, positioned $2000 below the outgoing automatic, at $28,590 before on-road costs.
As reported, powering all Qashqai models at launch is a new 1.3-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine, replacing the old 2.0-litre non-turbo four-cylinder used in various forms in all petrol variants of the Qashqai (and its predecessor, the Dualis) for nearly 15 years.
Outputs for the new engine are rated at 110kW and 250Nm – up 4kW/50Nm over the outgoing 2.0-litre – with the latter torque figure arriving at just 1600rpm. It’s paired to a CVT automatic gearbox as standard, driving the front wheels. The all-wheel drive option offered overseas isn’t bound for Australian showrooms, nor is the 12-volt mild-hybrid system paired to the 1.3-litre engine in Europe.
Combined fuel use is rated at 6.1L/100km, down from the outgoing Qashqai’s 6.9L/100km – though buyers keen on even more frugal economy will be able to opt for a new E-Power hybrid variant, due in late 2022.
Multi-link independent rear suspension is now standard across the range, teamed with a quicker steering rack for a sharper, more connected driving experience, Nissan says.
Opening the model range is the Qashqai ST, which offers standard features including 17-inch alloy wheels, automatic LED headlights, an 8.0-inch infotainment touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 7.0-inch instrument cluster display, six-speaker sound system, and front and rear parking sensors. A full list of standard equipment is included at the bottom of this story.
A wide array of active safety systems are standard across the range, including forward and reverse autonomous emergency braking (with forward-facing intersection support), lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring (with braking), rear cross-traffic alert, and traffic-sign recognition, plus a front centre airbag – a key step towards a five-star ANCAP safety rating.
Stepping up to the Qashqai ST+ adds 18-inch wheels, a 9.0-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay, wired Android Auto and satellite navigation, a 360-degree camera, LED fog lights, and rain-sensing wipers.
The mid-tier ST-L adds niceties such as 19-inch wheels, adaptive LED headlights with LED indicators, leather-accented trim, heated front seats, an electric driver’s seat, wireless phone charging, dual-zone climate control, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go (branded under Nissan’s ProPilot suite), privacy glass, roof rails and an auto-dimming rear-view mirror.
Sitting atop the range is the Qashqai Ti, which gains a 12.3-inch fully-digital instrument cluster, a 10.8-inch head-up display, panoramic glass sunroof, 10-speaker Bose sound system, memory and massaging front seats, a hands-free power tailgate, ambient cabin lighting, semi-automated parking, and more.
Further details of the new 2022 Nissan Qashqai will be confirmed closer to its Australian launch in early 2022, with the E-Power hybrid to follow in late 2022 (likely as a 2023 model). Customer “reservations” will open this month (September 2021).
