2022 Mercedes-AMG EQS53 to launch as sole EQS variant in Australia

While more affordable Mercedes-Benz EQS variants are offered in Europe, Australian buyers looking for an EQS will need to fork out for the range-topping AMG variant.

The high-performance Mercedes-AMG EQS53 will launch in the first half of next year in Australia as the sole Mercedes-Benz EQS variant, a spokesperson for the brand has confirmed to Drive.

Entry-level, single-motor EQS450+ and mid-tier, all-paw EQS580 4Matic variants are both sold in Europe, however neither will initially be offered Down Under.

In the Mercedes-AMG, dual motors – one on each axle – produce a combined 560kW/949Nm in Race Start mode, with the AMG Dynamic Plus package optioned. This allows the all-wheel-drive sedan to launch from zero to 100km/h in a claimed 3.4 seconds, on the way to an electronically-capped top speed of 220km/h.

Mercedes-Benz Australia looks forward to the local introduction of the all-new EQS … We will launch with the Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 4MATIC+ in the first part of 2022,” a spokesperson said.

While the AMG EQS53 will be the only option when the model initially goes on sale, cheaper variants have not been ruled out for Australian launches in the future.

Local pricing is yet to be confirmed, however Drive understands Mercedes-Benz is targeting approximate parity between comparable petrol S-Class and electric EQS models.

With the upcoming AMG S63 range-topper yet to be revealed, the most expensive variant of the standard, non-Maybach S-Class available in Australia – the Mercedes-Benz S580 L 4Matic – currently starts from $335,100 before on-road costs, suggesting the more powerful EQS53 could approach $400,000.
