2020 Toyota Camry SL hybrid review

I’ve spent more time as a passenger in versions of the Toyota Camry than I ever have behind the wheel. As a go-to vehicle for Uber drivers, it’s become synonymous in my mind with awkward small talk, free mints and five-star ratings. And based on those experiences alone, I’d be giving the Camry a solid two stars.

2020 Lamborghini Huracan Evo review

The poor little turtle scuttling down the double yellow lines provides a perfect counter to the 2020 Lamborghini Huracan Evo. The hare and the tortoise in real life – well, almost. I slow down and eventually come to a complete stop, worried a following car is going to hit the little guy. I look over at my father in the passenger seat, as the traffic behind me starts to build and horns start blaring.

Baby seats are serious business. Respect it.

I’m a firm believer in learning something from a well-trained, accredited source. There are people out there that spend their livelihood bothering to learn things, to exchange this empowerment for money. There are other ways to educate yourself, but I find this a crucial early step in the process.

Where does this leave you with your car's warranty?

2020 Ford Everest Sport BiTurbo review

Mick and Keith really could have been automotive marketers: if they saw a red door, they wanted it painted black. The same goes for chrome trim, alloy wheels and bumper valances – but not much rhymes with valance. The 2020 Ford Everest Sport is another in a long and unwavering line of darkened special editions which offer little more than their shiny counterparts, other than a ‘Stones approved message of simply, paint it black.

Chinese car maker Geely claims to have come up with a unique way to hand over new cars while keeping a safe distance during the COVID-19 outbreak – by getting a drone to deliver the keys. While it's unclear whether this is just a PR stunt, the company claims the service will be offered in select locations, using a remotely-controlled drone to deliver keys to front doors and even to the balconies of new-car buyers.

2020 Audi TT Coupe review

“Where we’re going, we don’t need roads,” said Doc at the end of 1985’s Back To The Future. That’s a fitting intro for a review of a DeLorean flying car, if a DeLorean or a flying car of any sort actually existed today, some three-and-a-half decades later.

Car dealers bracing for a sales slowdown lobby government to avoid compulsory coronavirus shutdowns

As car dealers across Australia brace for a sales slowdown amid coronavirus shutdowns, they have already begun lobbying state governments to be classified as “essential services” and be allowed to stay open during the crisis. The Australian Automotive Dealers Association (AADA), which represents 60,000 employees across 3500 showrooms nationally, says parts and service departments in particular should be allowed to remain open as more people shift to cars as they seek to avoid public transport.

The announcements come after US President Donald Trump put the wartime Defense Production Act into action to aid the fight against coronavirus.

2020 Honda Accord VTi-LX hybrid review

There’s always been something about the Honda Accord. Somehow, despite being a mid-size sedan from a Japanese brand aimed primarily at the US market (as mainstream as you’re ever likely to get), it has managed to stand apart as just a little bit more special.

Six seats and a tiny footprint: Meet the Tracy concept

What you’re looking at probably isn’t the future, but it’s a vision of what might be possible if design students from IED Turin take the reins of automobile design departments of the future. Like all good (and plenty of not-so-good) concept cars, the Istituto Europeo di Design (IED or European Institute of Design) Tracy concept dispenses with the notion of boundaries and limitations imposed by regulations and series production and gives a glimpse of what could be possible.

2020 Mazda 3 review: G25 Astina hatch

Spending more than $40,000 drive-away on a new Mazda 3 once meant you were jumping into an MPS hot-hatch variant. Since 2014, that kind of money has instead got you into an Astina-badged flagship model aiming to showcase the Japanese small car at its most sophisticated. Aside from the exclusive diesel power offered in the XD Astina, the extra sophistication then chiefly concerned the model’s extra safety technology over models below it.

For willing customers, the Whanganui dealer will chop the rear end to fit an enclosed flat-deck tray, revised tail lights and interior trim pieces to suit. The best part? The conversion is certified. However, what potential buyers might not find as cute as the finished product is the cost to get it there.

New automatic cars priced under $20,000 in Australia

There's an old saying that you should spend three months' salary on an engagement ring. According to consumer advice site finder.com.au, a similar rule applies when buying new cars. Ideally, it suggests, you shouldn't spend more than 15 per cent of your annual income on the purchase price of a car. That would mean someone on a salary of $100,000 (far more than the average Australian income) should be aiming for a car around $15,000 – not exactly achievable.

2020 Subaru Forester Hybrid 2.0e-L review

Subaru is now offering hybrid power in the Forester mid-sized SUV range, and the timing couldn't be better. It’s a hugely popular segment with a dizzying amount of choice, if with precisely one other conventional hybrid option in Toyota’s RAV4. Newcomer Forester Hybrid’s only direct rival has famously been thin on the ground, and it doesn’t appear to be getting thicker any time soon.

2014-2015 Mazda CX-5 recalled for lighting fix

In the event that the vehicle's headlights are not also on, inactive DRLs could reduce its visibility. Mazda Australia has confirmed it will contact affected owners to arrange inspection and free repair.

Watch two 2020 Land Rover Defenders recover a 20-tonne truck

Two 2020 Land Rover Defenders have been captured hard at work, recovering a stricken 20-tonne truck during a media drive in northern Namibia. The two pre-production Defenders were in Namibia for a pre-launch media event. The event was held in the remote Kunene region, where tarred roads are a rarity and dry, ephemeral river beds are often used as roads. It was in one of these dry watercourses that the stricken Scania truck, which Land Rover estimates to weigh 20 tonnes, was found.

Artists post car colouring pages for grownups and kids alike to weather the weeks ahead

When I was about seven years old, I traced a drawing of the Transformers and mailed it into a TV show called The Cartoon Company (which, funnily enough, ran on the Nine Network, my current employer). The hosts of the show held it up to the cameras, declared it a cracking good effort, and mailed me a box of Posca paint markers as a prize – and, terrible child that I was, I promptly set about painting the town red. And green. Blue, yellow, purple…

2021 Mercedes-AMG GT73 spied winter testing

Mercedes-AMG’s new performance plug-in hybrid GT 73 has been spied completing winter testing in Sweden. With most of the test mule’s camouflage removed, it’s clear to see just how extensively the model’s styling has been lifted from the four-door GT 63. Large air dams reside up front while chunky, twin-tip mufflers rest on either side of a rear diffuser. However, Mercedes has kept the covers on the GT 73’s rear bumper and – most importantly – its charging port.

2020 Mitsubishi Outlander Exceed review

Mitsubishi is uncommonly good at improving products as they progress through the life cycle. The current-generation Outlander premiered back in 2012, but remains a big-seller. Indeed, 2019 was its record year with more than 17,000 sales locally. Keen real-world pricing and a reputation for bulletproof reliability help, as do the constant updates trotted out in lieu of generational model changes. Actually, all three of these things are inextricably linked.

2020 BMW X5 M review

The BMW X5 M was one of the pioneers of the super-fast SUV segment, but cars like this are still an engineering marvel. How anyone can make a 2.3-tonne lump of metal slip through the air like a teardrop – even though it has the aerodynamic efficiency of a block of flats – boggles the mind.

Fake car sounds are rubbish

I’m of the belief that car sounds are very important. That could mean a lack of sound, too, depending what it is. If I’m buying a small hatch to dart around the inner ‘burbs, I may want it to be quiet, or at least not care if it is. If I’m buying my first performance car, though, I’ll most certainly want it to be sonorous in what it decides to emit from the front, as well as from the back.

In the age of iPhones, Tik Tok and artificial intelligence, it feels as though all things analogue now possess a certain nostalgic charm. Take the 2020 Hyundai Venue Elite. The real reason Holden sales hit the brakes last month

Holden sales hit the brakes last month as the brand announced its shock exit from Australia, but its lowest tally since 1948 was not due to a lack of interest from buyers. Holden reported just 1367 cars as sold in February 2020 as the brand slipped to 15th outright for the first time ever, but the number of people negotiating to buy a new Holden was in fact much higher than this.

The big barrier to electric cars according to Bentley

British luxury brand Bentley says it will be at the forefront of electric-car technology but it needs to wait for better battery technology. Bentley introduced its first hybrid model, a version of the Bentayga SUV, in October 2019 with a petrol-free driving range in excess of 50km.

Bigger Bentley Bentayga SUV – and a facelift – on the way

The Bentley Bentayga is likely to be joined by an even larger, super-luxury SUV sibling in response to the Rolls-Royce Cullinan. It is unclear how far away an even bigger Bentley Bentayga is from becoming a showroom reality, however the British brand has expressed interest in expanding its SUV line-up. The Bentley Bentayga is the company’s single biggest selling model, representing almost half of all new Bentleys sold last year.

2020 Lexus LC500 review: Inspiration Series

This is a dignified monster. V8s are pretty rare these days, and even more so if they don’t rely on being force-fed to make their power. That makes this, the Lexus LC500, a pretty rare beast on our roads. And that’s before you add Inspiration Series to the title.

McLaren’s Mike Flewitt interviewed

The short-notice cancellation of the Geneva motor show threw the PR plans of much of the global motor industry into chaos. But with senior executives having already booked out time for interviews, we actually still had the chance to speak to several of them – albeit over the phone, rather than face-to-face. So McLaren boss Mike Flewitt was sitting in rainy England rather than Switzerland when CarAdvice caught up with him, but there weren’t any shortage of topics for discussion.

Aston to replace AMG V8 with hybrid V6, secures V12 future

It’s fair to say that Aston Martin has been having a tough time of things lately. The company’s share price has tanked since an IPO in October 2018, with a consortium led by Canadian billionaire Lawrence Stroll bringing investment earlier this year, but also taking a large stake in the company. Development of electric models has been suspended for at least five years, and the corporate house has been bet on the success of the forthcoming DBX SUV. Yet CEO Andy Palmer is still smiling.

Design Review: Ferrari Mythos (1989)

The Ferrari Mythos concept by Italian design house Pininfarina, was by far most striking premiere at the 1989 Tokyo Motor Show. This two-seater, mid-engined Barchetta was conceived as a design study, however it managed to attain legendary status among petrol heads in the following decades. Now, more than 20 years after its launch, we revisit this rare supercar and discuss its legacy.

2020 Toyota C-HR Koba hybrid review

There’s little doubt the C-HR occupies a particularly competitive space in the market, with manufacturers seemingly magicking compact SUVs out of nowhere on an almost weekly basis.

2020 Toyota C-HR Koba hybrid review

Despite Toyota’s mass appeal as a brand, the market for its compact SUV, the C-HR, feels a little more niche – especially when compared to other crowd-pleasing competitors. With its seriously polarising kerb appeal, the only thing that could possibly make the C-HR more specific would be if it were a hybrid priced toward the top end of its segment. Well...

2020 BMW M135i xDrive review

You have to give BMW credit for persistently protecting the name of the car that started the company’s renowned M performance division. As much as the bean-counters in Munich must be itching for a full M version of its 1 Series hatchback they could charge even bigger money for, BMW’s most senior executives continue to insist it remains linked only to the 1979 M1 – the short-lived, wedge-shaped, homologation-inspired sports car.

International Women's Day podcast: Ladies in motorsport

International Women's Day, held on March 8, celebrates women's achievement and raises awareness against bias. This year, the theme is 'each for equal', taking action for equality. We still have a long way to go in the automotive industry for gender parity, but we are getting there. Organisations like Women in Automotive are helping, making ladies feel supported and giving them a chance to network within the sector, to make them feel they are not alone in a male-dominated industry.

The Australian startup turning old Land Rovers into EVs

Original Land Rovers were used to build Australia’s roads, fight its fires, and toil on its farms for decades. But those that remain are more likely to be falling apart in a paddock or shed. What to do with these icons? Sure, they could be restored to factory standard. Or they could be modernised in a way Maurice Wilks and his team could scarcely have foreseen.

Used car dealer capitalises on coronavirus, offers discount to infected customers

A used car dealership group in New Zealand has targeted sufferers of the coronavirus by offering them a $500 discount – although it's unclear how staff will prove the bonafides of ill buyers. One of the country's largest used car operators, 2 Cheap Cars, ran a sponsored Facebook advertisement with an image of a man wearing a face-mask with the caption: “Worried about using public transport? We’ve got loads of cars below $5000 or from $25 per week. Get in quick for a great deal!”.
