Design Review: Alfa Romeo Tonale (2019)

Usually, we explore concept cars launched several decades ago, but for this instalment we felt the need to talk about a car that was unveiled earlier this year at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show - the Alfa Romeo Tonale. The first Alfa Romeo with a hybrid powertrain is (at least for now) just a design study, even though we all know it's a sign of things to come from the Italian brand.

Australia's politicians are childish on EVs

The commentary about electric vehicles (EV) from Australia’s political class has been one of the more tedious issues during this interminable election. That’s irrespective of who you barrack for. I write this after keeping one anguished eye on a leader’s debate between two blokes rubbishing each other, and another eye on a Twitter-sphere speculating how much a Nissan Leaf costs ($50k) and discerning ‘results’ by studying body language.

Electric cars have been thrust into the spotlight in the lead-up to the 2019 Federal Election, driven by a proposed Labor policy to make 50% of new car sales electric by 2030. If you've been keeping up with coverage of the issue, you'll know there's a lot of misinformation and confusion around the technology. How long does it take to charge an electric vehicle? The French have this kind of effortless cool thing going on. Stereotypes aside, if you look you’ll see it in French cinema, French music, French fashion, French cuisine… Oddly, though, French cars tend to be somewhat hit or miss when it comes to the cool factor. There’s no doubt Renault was onto something when it introduced the Captur compact SUV to take the place of the Modus MPV overseas in 2013, followed up by an Australian introduction in 2014 – but is it effortlessly cool?

2020 Kia Soul review

Alexander Stoklosa • If you can picture rhythmic, life-size anthropomorphic hamsters, it is (hopefully) because of Kia's catchy marketing effort for the Soul subcompact crossover. We won't judge you if it isn't. Perhaps the Soul is familiar because one recently whisked you from a bar after being summoned by a ride-hailing app. Or, maybe, you or someone you know owns one—Kia has sold more than a million of the toaster-shaped things since 2009.

2020 MG eZS review: Quick drive

Predictably the eZS is a derivative of MG Motor’s existing ZS, a car sold in Australia with two petrol engines, a seven-year warranty and a price to pull people away from the Mazda CX-3 and all the rest… MG’s parent SAIC Motor made 140,000 electrified vehicles (EVs and PHEVs) last year alone, and it’s merely a top-three player at home alongside the likes of BYD. But what makes the MG eZS interesting is it will be the first of these China-made battery powered cars in Australia.

2019 Lexus RC F, RC F Track Edition review

Jonathon Buckley • Any time you get invited to a racetrack to throw a few laps down in somebody else’s car, I believe the appropriate response is an enthusiastic yes. When the track is the blisteringly fast Willow Springs Raceway and one of the cars is named ‘Track Edition’, then you have good reason to get genuinely excited. Or should that be crozzover?

Lotus Type 130 hypercar teased, but there's already much to know

It's not hard to make jokes about Lotus. Older readers might remember the acronym that the British sportscar brand's shonky build quality earned it in the 1970s and 80s: Lots Of Trouble, Usually Serious. It was a phrase later turned to summarise the company's frequent crises and revolving door management changes. In recent years trouble peaked with the unravelling of Dany Bahar's grandiose plans, announced at the 2010 Paris Motor Show, to launch no fewer than seven all-new models.

2019 BMW 530i Touring Luxury Line review

I'm a wagon man. SUVs may be the latest trend, but more often than not a wagon offers more cargo capacity, will drive better, and you won't blend into the crowd with yet another SUV. That's where the 2019 BMW 530i Touring comes into the mix. It gives you the same type of interior technology you'll find in an SUV, but with the design of a sleek and decent-looking wagon.

Behind the scenes of Daniel Ricciardo's new Renault campaign

Daniel Ricciardo is one of the best-known sportspeople in Australia. He's also one of the best-loved, with a million-dollar grin and a laid-back, relaxed demeanour completely at odds with his overtaking prowess on the track. He's at a new team in 2019, having jumped ship from Red Bull Racing to chase success at Renault. The French team finished fourth in 2018 and, despite a slow start to the 2019 season, has its sights set on the podium in the coming years.

Range Review: Volvo XC40, XC60, XC90

No Russian-doll design approach here – or ‘bricks’; just three SUVs sharing obvious design DNA while also forging their own distinct styling paths. Bringing these three Volvos together simply reinforces our views from both individual tests and comparisons: this is a formidable line-up with impressive consistency of quality, whether you’re looking at design, materials, safety, or engineering.

2018 Holden Commodore RS long-term review: Farewell

Our long-term Holden Commodore has been through the CarAdvice reader wringer, decried for not being Holden enough, not Commodore enough, not rear-wheel drive enough, not Australian enough. We can’t argue the last couple of points - it is after all, a front-wheel drive, German-designed and built car now owned by a French company. But, having lived it with for three months, the overarching impression is of a well-built, comfortable and well specified family hauler.

Mazda’s approach to the new-generation ‘3’ hatch is bold. It’s taken an enduringly popular offering in a segment full of conservative rivals, and prioritised design over space while increasing the price of entry in exchange for more technology and a premium cabin feel.

REVIEW: 2019 Mazda 3 hatch

Less practicality, more lifestyle: If a premium-feeling, sharp-handling, eye-catching small car is what you're after – if perhaps not an especially capacious one – then the new Mazda 3 mounts a stronger case than ever. Just be prepared to pay for the privilege.

Kia has recalled the 2019 Carnival, over concerns about its second-row seatbelt arrangement. According to the company, the seatbelt buckle for the middle second-row seat might have been installed on the wrong side. If that's the case, occupants won't be able to buckle their belt. Obviously, not wearing a seatbelt correctly greatly increases an occupant's risk of injury or death in an accident. A total of 150 cars are included – a VIN list is attached here.

It’s the $79,950 entry point into a US pick-up range that stretches beyond $150,000 if you get the heavy-duty model with the works.

Ariel Atom 4 review

Sorry to start all Sartre, but the skeletal Brit sports car has always been an intellectual exercise in minimalism as well as a means of A-to-B. The Atom is about what’s missing as much as what is there: no roof, no doors, no glass and pretty much zero bodywork. It’s more of an artfully assembled collection of gaps and spaces than a solid object.

2019 Toyota Corolla ZR petrol review

Some days I can’t see the tail end of a particular test car quickly enough, or send it packing to its corporate owner quickly enough. That’s certainly not the case after a solid week with the 2019 Toyota Corolla ZR hatchback. I warmed to it, could easily live with it, and I straight up like it.
