Trump threatens fresh tariffs in wake of GM plant closures

US president Donald Trump has threatened to raise tariffs on imported cars, in the wake of General Motors' announcement that it would close up to five manufacturing plants in the USA. In a series of tweets, Trump said that plans to introduce car tariffs are currently being studied. Citing the existing 25 per cent tariff on imported small trucks, he claimed that if the same tariff applied to passenger cars, GM would not have closed its plants in Michigan, Ohio and Maryland.

The Porsche Targa High Country Tour in a 718 Cayman GTS

Sports cars are designed to be driven hard. Foot to the floor, tyres gripping, the engine singing, and you don’t even glance at the speedometer. Try doing that on a public road, though, and say goodbye to your car and licence. But what if you could do all that legally? The Targa Australia rally series is just that.

2018 Honda HR-V VTi-S review

The ‘small SUV’ segment is the fastest-growing part of Australia’s new car market, up by 11 per cent this year. About 12 per cent of all the new vehicles sold in 2018 so far fit under this umbrella. In short, a growing army of people are ditching lower-riding hatchbacks and jumping into crossovers like the Honda HR-V, drawn to the driving position, chunkier look, and ability to hop over kerbs and speed bumps without scraping a bumper lip.

2019 Volkswagen Touareg review

Creator's Corner: George Koukos and the 'Alfa Romeo GTA Junior'

In the automotive world, the design work that is done behind closed doors inside the automakers' styling centres is a well-kept secret. The reality is that we get to see only a tiny portion of the sketches created during the development of a car, and that is after the unveiling takes place.

2018 Toyota Corolla v Volkswagen Golf comparison

The new Toyota Corolla took us aback when it arrived a few months ago. Far from familiar, its maker has driven the market's top-selling passenger car down a bolder path. Its design is edgier, its handling sharper, its safety tech leads the class, and a hybrid drivetrain is available at all specification levels. And it’s more expensive. But if Toyota really wants to stake its claim as the best small car, it needs to get past the ageless champion – Volkswagen's Golf.

2019 Skoda Scala interior revealed

The interior Skoda Scala has been revealed a week before the car's full debut on December 6, local time, in Tel Aviv, Israel. Although the touchscreen measures 9.2 inches diagonally, it looks significantly bigger as it surrounded by a black panel with integrated capacitive buttons.

2019 Mercedes-Benz B-Class review

The Mercedes-Benz B-Class is a car that defies classification. It’s not a people mover, although its boxy and tall dimensions lend it an air of one. It’s not a hatchback, certainly not in the traditional sense, and neither is it a station wagon, even if its side profile hints at a wagon-esque form. And it’s certainly no SUV.

2018 Mitsubishi ASX ES review

Let's deal with the elephant in the room here: the Mitsubishi ASX is old. It was released in 2010, but its underpinnings have their roots in the now-defunct Lancer launched in 2007. Including the incumbent John Howard, we've had six Prime Ministers – although Kevin Rudd having two turns bumps that to seven, technically – since the bones of the ASX were conceived. And yet it was the best-selling small SUV in Australia last month, and the month before that.

2018 Nissan Kicks review

Andrew Wendler • Filling the void left by the funky Juke (in the US, that is - Ed), the new-for-2018 Nissan Kicks focuses on offering value and versatility in a package designed to appeal to a broader audience. When the 2008 debuted in 2013, Peugeot was still the top dog among the French brands in Australia. It’s been smashed by Renault ever since. The compact SUV is indicative of how Peugeot has somehow fallen off many buyers’ radars. Despite many competitive qualities (and a charming persona), the 2008 has struggled for a meaningful share of its ever-growing segment. Make that the fastest-growing segment for 2018, with a 25 per cent year-on-year increase.

2019 Ford Focus: Entry-level Ambiente surfaces in Australian govt database

The all-new Ford Focus has already been priced and specified for Australia – including the new crossover-styled Focus Active – but there's still one gaping hole in the line-up: a low-$20k base model. Well, that could all be about to change. The Australian Government's 'Green Vehicle Guide' included a mystery Ambiente variant in its Focus listing – which details a vehicle's CO2 emissions, fuel consumption, and noise data.

The next-generation Kia Soul has been spotted on the streets of Mexico City ahead of its debut this week at the 2018 Los Angeles motor show. These photos were taken by Donovan Ivan Bernal, and published on the Facebook page of Auto Dinamico. Apart from a bit of tape on the D-pillar and on the Kia badges, these low resolution pictures give us our first unobstructed look at the exterior of the third-generation Soul.

2018 Jeep Wrangler Freedom Edition review

From an introduction in 2006, the current Jeep Wrangler has had a long innings. But as an iconic automotive anachronism, there’s less of a pressing need to keep it at the cutting edge. Low-key updates over time have given the Wrangler a little extra polish, but make no mistake, it has maintained rugged 4x4 ability as a core value, with creature comforts and modern conveniences pushed down the list of priorities.

WLTP 'close to catastrophic' for Bentley - report

Bentley has joined the list of manufacturers impacted heavily by the introduction of new Worldwide Harmonised Light vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP) regulations in Europe. Speaking with Automotive News Europe, Bentley CEO, Adrian Hallmark, said the introduction of a new, stricter test protocol was "close to catastrophic" for the automaker.

2019 Porsche 911 leaked

Press photos of the new Porsche 911 have been leaked ahead of the car's official debut at the 2018 Los Angeles motor show next week. From countless spy photos we already knew the next-generation 911, codenamed 992, would feature an evolutionary body. From the even more pronounced wheel arches to the slimmer tail-lights and flush-fitting door handles, it's clearly new, but not too new, if you know what we mean.

Tesla Model X v Lamborghini Aventador S drag - video

We know the Tesla Model X P100D is very, very quick off the line. It recently won a drag race against its super-SUV rivals, but there's always something faster and more powerful ready to race. With 450kW on tap from its four electric motors, and something called Ludicrous Mode, the Model X is a proper straight-line weapon, but it's up against some serious metal this time around.

2018 Kia Cerato Sport automatic review

It’s the Korean brand’s biggest-selling car in Australia, accounting for nearly 33 per cent of Kia’s local sales so far in 2018. Yet, the Kia Cerato remains relatively anonymous on our roads. Roads drowning in a sea of mid-sized SUVs and dual-cab utes, not to mention big-selling rivals from Toyota, Mazda and Hyundai in the small-car segment.

Range Rover Evoque embodies 'less is more' philosophy - lead designer

Styling is a precarious art, for both the designer and the consumer. You might think redesigning a Land Rover or Range Rover of any kind is tough (reference Defender and the lengthy wait for a replacement) but you'd be hard-pressed to find a bigger challenge than replacing the style-driven Evoque.

What would a rally-ready Ferrari look like?

Motorsport is all about speed, but that doesn't mean it's the preserve of supercars. Where could a Toyota Yaris possibly dominate? The answer is, of course, rally. For decades now, car manufacturers have been taking conventional small cars, and turning them into gravel-slinging pocket rockets complete with spotlights, roll cages and much, much more powerful engines.

2018 Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 S sets Nurburgring lap record for SUVs

The 2018 Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 S has set a new SUV lap record at the famed Nurburgring Nordschleife in Germany, beating its rival, the Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio, by a scant three seconds. It took just 7 minutes and 49 seconds for the GLC 63 S to complete the lap, putting it alongside cars like the Lamborghini Murciélago LP 640 (7:47), the 997.1 Porsche GT3 RS (7:48) and the BMW M4 (7:52).

Honda Civic Type R meets S2000 on track - video

The latest Honda Civic Type R has already established itself as one of the meanest, quickest hatchbacks going around – then again, it would want to be, given its storied lineage. Along with a history of quick, front-drive hatchbacks, Honda has the S2000 in its back catalogue. Sure, it's a rear-wheel drive convertible, but the idea of putting one head-to-head with the latest Type R is still tasty.

While we wait for the new-generation Toyota RAV4 to debut in Australia, it's worth taking a look at what's on offer right now. Which of these mid-sized SUVs should you consider? Let us help you decide!

2018 Medium SUV Mega Test

Mid-2018 marked another milestone moment in Australian new-car sales. The mid-sized SUV displaced the small car as Australia’s favourite vehicle type in June. It happened again in August, September and October. It was perhaps only inevitable after SUVs started outselling passenger cars in 2017. Interestingly, though, no mid-sized SUV is threatening to displace the Toyota HiLux ute as the country’s most popular vehicle.

Mazda CX-8: Petrol off the menu for Australia

With the CX-9 and CX-5 now available with a turbocharged petrol engine, Mazda has ruled out bringing a petrol version of its segment-straddling CX-8 to Australia. With power from the same 2.5-litre turbo and naturally-aspirated engines offered in the CX-5, the non-diesel CX-8 was revealed as part of a mid-life refresh in Japan. Nissan removes Carlos Ghosn as chairman

Nissan has confirmed Carlos Ghosn has been removed by the board as company chairman. Ghosn and his co-accused, Greg Kelly, have also been removed as representative directors. According to Automotive News, under the Japanese system of corporate governance, only representative directors can legally speak for the company when signing contracts and deals.

2019 Honda Urban EV spied

The production version of the Honda Urban EV has been spied for the first time. When it unveiled the Urban EV concept at the 2017 Frankfurt motor show, the company confirmed it would head into production from 2019 as its first mass-produced electric car for all markets outside of China. As it is covered from head to toe in camouflage, we can't see all of the production car's design details, but we can see the differences between it and the 2017 concept.

2019 BMW X5 review

There is this ongoing debate between BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Land Rover over who created the world’s first luxury SUV. They all seem to lay claim to the title, yet at the same time ignore the other’s assertions. It’s an interesting strategy.

2019 Range Rover Evoque review: Prototype drive

The word 'drive' in relation to our experience today in London with the all-new 2019 Range Rover Evoque is a tenuous one. Quick drive? Rapid drive? Almost a drive? Not quite a drive? A drive just to whet the appetite? Any would probably be more apt than 'drive' specifically. However, CarAdvice was among the first media in the world to drive the new Evoque – and the first people in the world outside the factory – to see it in the flesh. So, there's no complaining here.

2019 Range Rover Evoque revealed

Range Rover has revealed the 'all-new' (similar-looking) 2019 Evoque, headlined by fresh technology, a redesigned cabin, and the availability of a mild-hybrid powertrain. It dominates the front end, with a criss-crossing chrome pattern.

2018 Subaru Liberty, Outback recalled

Subaru Australia has issued a recall for the 2018 Liberty and Outback over concerns vehicles may not display the correct driving range. The Japanese manufacturer reports affected models could feature a programming error in the Combination Meter Display (CMD), which could cause the driving range indicator to display an inaccurate reading for the distance before refuelling.

Mazda has demand for 'about 3000' CarPlay retrofits so far

Remember all that talk about whether Mazda was charging too much for its Apple CarPlay and Android Auto retrofit? It looks like the price is right, because the company has around 3000 people requesting the upgrade. That's according to Alastair Doak, marketing director at Mazda Australia, who today told CarAdvice the company has already re-ordered parts from Japan twice, suggesting demand has exceeded expectations.

2019 Range Rover Evoque teased again

Porsche 911 GT2 RS gains Clubsport Package option

Porsche has added a new Clubsport Package to the GT2 RS options list, further burnishing its track-ready nature. The headline addition is a new, FIA-approved steel roll cage where the seats are fitted to more mundane Porsche 911 variants. It's bolted into the chassis behind the front seats, and works with an FIA-approved fire extinguisher and six-point harnesses to make the car more race-friendly.

McLaren Senna GTR spied

Spy photographers have snapped images of what is believed to be a hotter version of the McLaren Senna, which could don the 'GTR' moniker. So, like the hatch, the Active wagon seems to be a front-wheel drive only affair.

2011-15 Mazda BT-50 recalled

Mazda has recalled BT-50 models sold between October 21, 2011 and June 21, 2016, over concerns about the door latch tabs. According to the company, a broken locating tab could prevent the door from closing or, if the door is closed, make it unlatch on the move. A total of 53,320 cars are affected by the campaign – a VIN list is attached here. Mazda Australia will contact owners of the affected vehicles and advise them to get in touch with their nearest dealer for a free fix.

2018 BMW X4 M40i review

Coupe-styled SUVs, like the BMW X4, are far from a new idea, yet as ever more manufacturers add swoopy SUVs to their ranges, the format remains controversial – from both stylistic and practicality points of view. As unpopular as it may seem, I like them. I mean, they all look ungainly to me, and there’s little chance I’d ever own one, but I like that they exist and extend the power of choice. I like anything that gives customers a wider scope of options to suit themselves.

Design review: The Jaguar C-X75 concept

Some CarAdvice readers suggested we review the design of the Jaguar C-X75 concept (2010), which came very close to reaching production status before the project was shelved back in 2012. Besides the design, we are also going to cover the concept car’s interesting story that has been the subject of discussion for years amongst automotive enthusiasts.

2018 Lotus Evora recalled

Lotus has issued a recall for two examples of its 2018 Evora over concerns a build issue could cause a steering fault. The British sports car specialist reports 'select vehicles' could have a steering column cartridge screw that isn't to specification. If the condition occurs, the screw could disengage from the cartridge thread, causing the "actions of the steering column" to become unpredictable. Lotus says the fault could result in serious injury or even death to the vehicle's occupants.

Four-door TT is off the table, Audi says

Audi has scrapped plans for a four-door derivative of its TT coupe, suggesting it would be tricky to deliver a practical 'family' car that does justice to the badge's heritage. The idea for a TT Sportback was first mooted by Audi technical chief, Ulrich Hackenberg, as part of a push to expand its model line-up. We even saw the TT Sportback concept (pictured below) in 2014, but a production version hasn't been forthcoming.

First up: Israel is killing off the internal combustion engine, as is Norway. How will this impact global car development and production?

2019 Toyota RAV4 review

I’ll spare you the long-winded build-up and just state it: the all-new 2019 Toyota RAV4 is pretty bloody good. And I’d bet something large and valuable that it’ll go down a treat with a great many buyers, many of whom are still signing up in droves for an ageing fourth-generation range that remains the second-biggest seller (behind the Mazda CX-5) in Australia’s hottest-selling segment (V-Facts YTD).

2019 Audi A1 review

The light – or if you prefer, city – car segment remains an important hunting ground for carmakers, despite new-car buyers flocking to SUVs and dual-cab utes for their automotive needs. Still, last year, the light-car segment harnessed just over 70,000 new-car sales in Australia, representing 7.2 per cent of the market. Of those, just over 1000 were Audi’s first-generation A1 hatch, the brand’s cute take on the city car segment.

2020 Audi RS Q3 spied with less camouflage

The Audi RS Q3 has been spied again, this time in southern Europe instead of the Nurburgring. More significantly the company has stripped away much of the camouflage covering the doors, pillars, bonnet and tailgate. The grille and front air vents have a new pattern shared with prototypes of the upcoming RS Q8. We can also see the car's more pronounced side sills, and the two large exhaust tips at the back.

Are track days a thing of the past? Doing a tarmac rally in the Hyundai i30 N

I remember watching Targa Tasmania one year and thinking how cool it would be to get a race car and have a crack. It wasn’t long before I realised it’s much harder than it looks, it’s much more expensive than it looks, and I’d likely run out of skill shortly before spearing off the road into a tree.

2019 Mercedes-Benz GLE review

With the all-new fourth generation, Mercedes-Benz has upped the size, tech and features list of its popular GLE, while filling at least one hole left gaping in the outgoing generation. 2021 Jaguar F-Type could go electric - report

The next-generation Jaguar F-Type could become a two-seat all-electric sports car to rival the upcoming Tesla Roadster. Autocar understands the British car maker is evaluating whether the next-generation F-Type should be designed as a pure electric vehicle. Under the electric-only proposal, the company's designers would have the most scope to recall the classic proportions of the venerated E-Type, and would fit with plans being discussed to turn Jaguar into an all-electric marque.

How much difference do winter tyres make on ice? - video

Ever wondered what kind of difference winter tyres make on icy roads? A new video from North American tyre fitter Tire Rack has set out to do just that. Although they're not really necessary in much of Australia, whether to bother with cold-weather specific rubber is a critical decision in frostier parts of the world. This video compares summer and winter tyres on both all-wheel and rear-wheel drive vehicles, showing just how much of a difference the right rubber can make.

During an extraordinary hour-and-a-half long press conference, Hiroto Saikawa, CEO of Nissan, talked as candidly as he could about the events leading up Carlos Chosn's arrest, and his influence on the company. In a spartan room, notable for the complete lack of Nissan branding, Saikawa read from notes for over 20 minutes, repeatedly stating the danger of concentrating too much power in one individual and referencing Ghosn's "long regime".

The latter engine disappeared when the second-generation R8 was unveiled in 2015.

2019 Alpine A110 review: Australian launch at Targa High Country

Make no mistake, the new Alpine A110 is first and foremost an enthusiast’s car. Fast, light and extremely agile. But, it’s also a car that can be driven as a daily, not even fast, mind, but enjoyed all the same, by anyone. I’d go further and issue a warning to those keen enough to try it out – make sure you’ve got the coin for an on-the-spot purchase, because this thing is also thoroughly addictive and fast acting to boot.

2018 Holden Commodore RS long-term review: Cabin comfort and practicality

We already know the new European-designed Holden Commodore is smaller than the Aussie-built large sedan it has replaced, in our minds, if not our hearts. The question is, how much smaller? And will you really notice? And at first sitting, not really. There’s still ample room for four adults to travel in comfort. Yes, there’s less head and shoulder room than in the previous-generation car, but in terms of knee room, it’s on a par with the VF II.

“Don’t run out of talent.” That’s the tip in our drivers’ briefing from Frank Stippler, Nurburgring 24 Hour winner and Audi factory driver. I’m sharply reminded of those words of wisdom as I approach a particularly challenging 90-degree left-hand corner a little too hot.

Mitsubishi to lead Alliance dual-cab development? Not so fast, says Nissan

How much faster have Formula E cars become? - video

Formula E is still in its infancy as a sport. After four years with the same car, it's moving to a new vehicle for season five. Chief among improvements is battery life: at the moment, drivers need to swap cars halfway through a race. Come next season, they'll be able to last the full distance. The cars look meaner, too. To show that, among those improvements, the new cars are much, much faster than before, Formula E has put the Gen 1 and Gen 2 cars side-by-side.

2007-16 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter: Takata recall initiated

Mercedes-Benz has initiated its Takata recall for the Sprinter, recalling vehicles to have their driver and passenger inflators replaced. 2010-16 Ford Fiesta, 2011-15 Ranger recalled

Ford has recalled the Fiesta and Ranger, over concerns about the pawl spring tab in the side-door latch. According to the company, the spring tab in a side-door latch could break, which usually prevents the door from latching. If the car can be closed, however, the door could open while the vehicle is moving. That increases the risk of accident, and puts some occupants at risk of falling out of the vehicle while it's in motion.

This is pretty much across the range, save for the Colorado. Amongst a competitive mob of forever-evolving utes, the Colorado has managed to hold over 1000 sales every month. It’s beaten by four other manufacturers in that segment, but it's still a very important product for Holden.

Why December is the perfect time to buy a new car

The hunt for a new car was once a very different process. These days, it’s essentially all digital.

2019 Alpine A110 review: Targa High Country

Any review of the latest interpretation of the A110 must surely begin with a bit of history about the brand, such is the connection between past and present surrounding this storied marque.

2019 Mitsubishi Triton review

A midlife update usually brings some design tweaks to the grille and bumper, but Mitsubishi has gone a few steps beyond this with its MY19 Triton ute that arrives less than four years into the current version’s life cycle. The company has completely redesigned the front, adding its familiar ‘dynamic shield’ face and making the side-view more bluff. It’s prouder, bolder and more macho, which is exactly what ute buyers want.
