2018 Ssangyong Rexton Sports ute unveiled

The Ssangyong Rexton Sports ute has been unveiled in South Korea, with sales slated to begin next week.

Forward of the B-pillar, the new Sports looks identical to the current Rexton SUV. Behind that point, the car features redesigned rear doors, a truncated passenger cabin and, of course, a cargo tray.

Under the bonnet is a 2.2-litre turbo-diesel engine. Although outputs are yet to be confirmed, the 2.2-litre mill develops 133kW of power and 420Nm of torque in the SUV.

While the Rexton SUV is available with a seven-speed automatic transmission from Mercedes-Benz, buyers of the Sports will be limited to a six-speed manual or six-speed Aisin automatic.

Prices in South Korea range from ₩23.5 million to ₩30.9 million ($28,400 to $37,300).

Depending on model, the Rexton Sports is available with an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, or a 9.2-inch display with satellite navigation inside. Alloy wheels come in 17-, 18- and 20-inch sizes.

Other available features include brown Nappa leather, a surround-view camera system, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, heated and cooled front seats, xenon headlights, dual-zone climate control, keyless entry and push-button start, faux leather dashboard wrap, front and rear parking sensors, and heated wipers.

The company’s UK distributor has confirmed the car will be sold there as the Musso from late-2018, with a 1.0-tonne payload rating and 3.5-tonne towing capacity.

Australia

It’s not clear whether the Rexton Sports will ever see the inside of an Australian showroom as the brand is currently on hiatus. Last February, CarAdvice confirmed Ssangyong and Ateco, the local importer, were still attempting to thrash out pricing and a long-term strategy.
