Mercedes-Benz has issued a recall for 382 examples of the MY2015 V-Class and related Vito over concerns the driver’s airbag could deploy “without obvious cause”.
The German marque says the fault is the result of electrostatic discharge, caused by the steering column not being sufficiently grounded and the column’s switch module being damaged or faulty.
If the condition occurs, an airbag warning alert will display in the driver’s instrument display, along with a red airbag indicator lamp.
Should the airbag be triggered while the vehicle is in use, it poses risk of injury to the driver, while also increasing the risk of an accident.
Affected V-Class and Vito vehicles were sold between 1 May 2015 and 31 July 2015. The VIN list can be viewed here.
Owners of the recalled units are advised to contact their local Mercedes-Benz Van dealer to arrange the inspection and repair of their vehicle, which will be carried out free of charge.
