Hyundai has unveiled the facelifted 2018 Sonata, bringing new looks, a revised interior and more technology to the mid-size sedan.
Gone is the Elite trim level from the outgoing Sonata, meaning the new car will be available in just Active and Premium spec. The range kicks off with the Active (below), which is powered by a naturally-aspirated 2.4-litre engine hooked up to a six-speed automatic transmission. It has 138kW of power and 241Nm of torque, with a claimed combined fuel use of 8.3l/100km.
Standard equipment includes six airbags, hill-start assist, auto-headlamps, a rear-view camera and park assist, a new 8.0-inch touchscreen display in the dashboard, and keyless entry.
Active buyers miss out on the Hyundai Smart Sense suite of driver assist systems, which means adaptive cruise, blind-spot warnings and rear-cross traffic alerts aren’t included. They also aren’t available as an option.
Pricing starts at $30,990 plus on-road costs, but you’ll pay $595 for premium paint. Services are scheduled at 12 month/15,000km intervals, and cost $265 each – with the exception of the 48 month/50,000km visit which will set you back $365.
Compared to the Active, the Premium (above) comes as standard with the Smart Sense suite, including adaptive cruise, blind-spot warnings, lane-departure warnings and rear cross-traffic alerts. Autonomous emergency braking (AEB) isn’t a part of the suite, however, and isn’t on the options list. Hyundai’s local arm says the technology isn’t available to our market.
Rain-sensing wipers are standard, as are power-folding mirrors, LED lights all around, powered front seats with memory , which are heated and cooled too, along with an electric parking brake.
It swaps the Active’s Continental ContiPremiumContact 5 tyres for Michelin Pilot Sport 3 units as well.
Power comes from a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine making 180kW and 353Nm, hooked up to a new eight-speed automatic gearbox, for a claimed combined fuel efficiency figure of 8.5l/100km.
Pricing kicks off at $45,490 plus ORCs, and you’ll pay $595 for premium paint. Servicing intervals have been extended from every 7500km in the previous Sonata Turbo to every 10,000km, with each visit costing $275 – except for the 48 month/50,000km interval, where you’ll pay $355.
From the front, you’ll be able to distinguish the new Sonata from its predecessor by the new headlights and ‘Cascading Grille’ – a design cue that started on the new-generation i30 hatch. The Premium also gets a new diffuser-style bumper, and rides on unique twin-spoke alloy wheels.
As before, the car rides on suspension tuned for Australian roads, with MacPherson struts at the front and a fully-independent setup at the rear. The refreshed Hyundai Sonata range is available to order now.
