2018 Honda Civic Type R docks in Australia

The first 2018 Honda Civic Type R examples destined for Australian garages have arrived on our shores, with an initial shipment docking in Melbourne this week.

Some 400 vehicles are scheduled to arrive before the year’s end, with more shipments bound for Australia in the coming weeks. Honda Australia says there have already been over 350 dealer orders and more than 6500 pre-registrations for its new hot hatch, which currently holds the front-wheel drive lap record at the iconic Nurburgring circuit in Germany.

Around 60 Civic Type Rs were included in this first shipment, which arrived at the Port of Melbourne’s Webb Dock. These vehicles will soon be on their way to Honda dealers across Victoria, South Australia and the Northern Territory, where they will be delivered to their owners.

Under the bonnet is a 2.0-litre turbocharged VTEC engine developing 228kW of power and 400Nm of torque, sending drive to the front wheels exclusively through a six-speed manual transmission.

Honda claims its new hot hatch can sprint from zero to 100km/h in 5.7 seconds, on its way to a top speed of 272km/h.

Kicking off at $50,990 plus on-road costs in Australia, equipment highlights for the Civic Type R include adaptive dampers with three driving modes, 20-inch alloy wheels, the Honda Sensing active driver assistance technology suite, keyless entry with push-button start, and a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
