An early preview sketch for what could be our first look at the new 2018 BMW Z4 roadster has been handed down this week.
The company has offered little else in the way of detail, and it remains to be seen if the topless Bimmer bound for August’s Pebble Beach Concours D’Elegance will serve any greater purpose than highlighting the company’s styling chops.
A successor to the Z4 has been spied testing on a number of occasions, however, so it is likely the stars will align on this concept being the first official preview of what’s to come.
Under the skin, the new roadster will ride on a platform developed together with Toyota, which will use the architecture to underpin its own special sports car – expected to be a successor to the popular Supra coupe.
Whatever else BMW will reveal in the weeks and months ahead, it now appears a certainty the next-generation roadster will not wear a Z5 badge.
Speaking with website Autoguide in May, BMW North America boss Ludwig Willisch said: “There will be a sports car, yes, but it’s not going to be a Z5. That’s something that someone else has made up.”
“It will be called Z… probably 4.”
