Local pricing and specifications for the 2017 Renault Megane sedan and wagon have been revealed this week, taking the body-style count from one – the now familiar five-door hatch – to a full three.
The wagon will compete with equivalent versions of the Peugeot 308 and Volkswagen Golf, while the more style-focused sedan will do battle with the likes of the Honda Civic, Hyundai Elantra and Skoda Octavia.
Justin Hocevar, managing director for Renault Australia, said: “The all-new Renault Megane wagon and sedan enable us to broaden our offer in one of the largest and most competitive segments of the new car market”.
Megane sedan
The three-box version of Renault’s small car is essentially a successor to the unloved Fluence – dropped from the Australian line-up in 2015 – and will be offered in two specification levels which are in line with the hatch.
Both versions come with the 97kW/205Nm 1.2-litre turbo petrol engine shared with the hatch, and come as standard with the company’s seven-speed EDC dual-clutch automatic.
Kicking off the range is the Zen, which starts at $27,490 before on-road costs. Standard kit includes front and rear parking sensors, a 7.0-inch R-Link 2 infotainment system with satellite navigation, Arkamys eight-speaker audio system, automatic headlights and wipers, rear-view camera, and an electronic park brake.

Safety is taken care of with six airbags, stability control and hill start assist, however, to get advanced driver assistance systems like autonomous emergency braking (AEB) and lane departure warning, buyers must shell out an additional $700 for the ADAS package. An electric sunroof with an automatically-dimming rear-view mirror and illuminated vanity mirrors is a $1990 option.
The flagship sedan is the Intens ($31,990 plus ORCs), and adds the ADAS pack as standard, along with blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control and distance warning, along with side parking sensors, an upgraded 8.7-inch portrait-style R-Link 2 infotainment system, park assistant, 18-inch alloy wheels, and privacy glass.

Other extras include an electric panoramic sunroof, dark charcoal cloth, LED daytime-running lights, and full-LED headlights.
Compared to the closely-related hatch, the sedan features a more accommodating luggage area measuring 503 litres – substantially up on the hatchback’s 434L luggage area.
The only other cost-extra for the sedan is metallic paint ($600).
Megane wagon
Also arriving on Australian shores is the Megane wagon, which comes in Zen, GT-Line and performance-oriented GT variants.
The Zen and GT-Line are both powered by the 97kW/205Nm 1.2-litre turbo shared with the hatch and sedan, while the GT gets a far more substantial 1.6-litre turbo producing 151kW of power and 280Nm of torque. All versions are equipped with the dual-clutch EDC transmission as standard.
Standard specification in the Zen ($28,490 plus ORCs) mirrors that of the sedan and hatch, which includes the 7.0-inch R-Link 2 infotainment system with satellite navigation, front and rear parking sensors, Arkamys eight-speaker audio system, along with automatic headlights and wipers.

Next in the range is the sporty-styled GT-Line wagon, starting at $33,490 before on-roads. Extra equipment includes the ADAS package, blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, side parking sensors, a larger 8.7-inch portrait-style R-Link 2 multimedia unit, a personalisable TFT driver’s instrument display, Alcantara seat upholstery, 17-inch alloy wheels, electric panoramic sunroof and privacy glass.
Finally, the flagship GT ($39,490) gets the aforementioned engine upgrade, launch control and multi downshift, four-wheel steering, sports suspension, black and blue Alcantara trim, a more aggressive GT front bumper, and 18-inch alloy wheels.

The Zen variant can be optioned with the ADAS pack ($700) and a sunroof pack ($1990), while both the GT-Line and GT can be specified with a Premium Pack ($1490) – adding a Bose audio system and full-LED headlights – while the GT-Line has the option of 18-inch rims ($990) and the GT misses out on a sunroof as standard, requiring a $1990 spend. Metallic paints also add $600.
Both the Renault Megane sedan and wagon are available to order now.
