Toyota has issued a recall for 39,754 its 2015 to 2017 HiLux 4×2 Hi Rider and 4×4 utes over concerns vehicles fitted with the auxiliary battery kit could develop damage due to vibrations.

According to the Japanese manufacturer, HiLux vehicles equipped with the Toyota Genuine Accessory pack could experience damage to the left-hand front fender apron, due to the improper installation of the battery kit, which causes vibration when driving over rough surfaces.

If the condition occurs, the battery could also move and interfere with the surrounding engine wire harness, causing wire damage and potentially illuminating warning lights in the instrument cluster. The engine could even stall in a worst case scenario.

Toyota says approximately 1500 of the auxiliary battery kits were sold nationally until sales were discontinued on 13 January 2017, meaning just over 39,700 will require inspection for fitment of the accessory.

In the recall notice, the company says: “Toyota Australia will send a letter to all involved customers so they can make an appointment at their preferred Toyota dealer or provide advice that their vehicle is not fitted with an auxiliary battery kit”.

“If a vehicle does have a genuine Toyota auxiliary battery kit, an initial inspection will be conducted to confirm the auxiliary battery kit mounting condition and countermeasure parts will be installed at a later date.”

Replacement parts are expected to become available during June 2017.

Affected HiLux utes were sold from 29 September 2015 through 14 January 2017. A VIN table for the recalled models can be viewed here.
