The Holden Commodore ‘VXR’ has been spied undergoing road testing in Germany, and despite being sold with Opel, Vauxhall and Buick badges elsewhere in the world, this prototype is wearing the Holden lion.
It’s not certain what the hottest variant yet of the next-generation Commodore will be known as, but it’s almost certain it will be branded as the Opel Insignia OPC on the Continent, and the Vauxhall Insignia VXR in the UK.
Compared to the versions of the Holden Commodore, Opel and Vauxhall Insignia, and Buick Regal liftback that have been revealed so far, this OPC/VXR model has a number of design changes visible despite the full-body camouflage.
Up front, the Commodore VXR has a new front bumper with redesigned lower air intakes. Along the sides we can see aggressively styled sills, a new alloy wheel design, lowered suspension, and Brembo brakes.
Out the back there’s a much more prominent spoiler along the trailing edge of the liftback tailgate. There’s also a new lower section for the rear bumper, which includes stylised metallic surrounds for the exhaust tips.
Under the bonnet, it’s rumoured the Commodore VXR will feature a twin-turbo version of GM’s 3.6-litre V6 tuned to generate between 260kW and 300kW of power. All-wheel drive is virtually certainty.
The most powerful confirmed variant of the new Commodore range features all-wheel drive and a 230kW/370Nm naturally-aspirated 3.6-litre V6.
With Holden’s plant in Elizabeth due to close on October 20, 2017, the next-generation Commodore will be fully imported from Germany.
Based on GM’s front- and all-wheel drive E2XX platform, the new Commodore will feature 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol and diesel engines, as well as a naturally-aspirated 3.6-litre V6.
The new Commodore will be available as a five-door liftback, Sportwagon, and high-riding Tourer.
