The first teaser of the new Renault Megane RS has been spotted at the end of a video released overnight to celebrate Renault Sport’s one millionth Facebook fan.
Under its digital shroud we can’t see much of the new hot hatch, but we do know now that it will retain the standard Megane’s C-shaped headlights, while also adopting the chequered flag-style fog lights first seen on the Clio RS 16 concept.
From the most recent spy photos, taken in December 2016, we also know that the Megane RS will feature a wider track and, most likely, pumped up front and rear fenders. December’s prototype also featured Brembo brakes and centrally mounted twin exhaust tips.
It’s unknown at this stage what motor will power the new Megane RS. One rumour has it that it that the new car will use a more powerful version of the 1.8-litre turbo, which makes 185kW/320Nm in the Alpine A110 coupe.
Others state that an 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine will motivate the RS. It’s likely that whatever engine is used, the new Megane RS will have around 300PS or 225kW. If so, the new RS will be in the same ballpark as the latest Honda Civic Type R, which is motivated by a 235kW/400Nm 2.0-litre turbo.
The rumourmill predicts a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission will be offered alongside a six-speed manual.
We’ll know all these details when the new Megane RS is launched “soon”, most likely at this year’s Frankfurt motor show in September.
