Labor set 'ambitious' 50% EV sales target by 2030
The car industry has expressed caution over an "ambitious" plan to have 50 per cent of all new car sales electric by 2030. Peak body for carmakers in Australia, the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI), said Labor's proposal for electric vehicles and emissions standards is "ambitious" but "anything's possible" – provided the required infrastructure and buyer incentives are put on the table. "It's about getting that broader environment right," said Tony Weber, FCAI CEO.
How to reduce your insurance premium by buying a safer car
Buying a new car can be fun, but paying all the costs associated with owning a new car certainly isn't. In addition to registration and fuel, insurance is an ongoing cost you can't shake. Here's a handy way to bring it down.
Volkswagen Golf celebrates 45th anniversary
The Volkswagen Golf is celebrating its 45th birthday this week, having officially commenced production in Wolfsburg on March 29, 1974. With 35 million units sold globally in the time since, Volkswagen says a Golf has been ordered "every 41 seconds" since 1974, equating to an average of 780,000 units per annum. 2019 Range Rover Evoque first drive
The new Evoque’s most impressive attribute is its ability to do exactly what the intended buyer will want. It stands out on the road thanks to its revised, modernised styling. It feels premium and exclusive inside the cabin. It has cutting-edge tech that works. And it's a luxurious SUV to drive. It’s hard to find a reason the new Range Rover Evoque won't carry on the sales success of the original – a hard-to-believe eight years after its initial launch.

Hyundai Australia lacks direct Accent light car successor
Hyundai Australia is at risk of entering 2020 without a cut-price light car once stock of the massively popular $15,990 drive-away Accent hatch runs out before the end of this year. The ‘current’ Accent sold in Australia is actually now out of production, but Hyundai ordered a sufficient final-run supply from Korea to keep its dealers stocked for the time being.

That's more than the Amarok's largest market and country of origin, Argentina, where 3931 of the overall 18,201 Amaroks sold last year were V6 versions.

2019 Range Rover Evoque review
The 2019 Range Rover Evoque is, without any hint of overstatement, a genuinely vital car for the iconic English marque. The original Evoque was, of course, the fastest-selling Range Rover in history. Whatever the shortcomings or criticisms from the so-called experts over the time the old model was on sale, the Evoque made an immediate and significant impact on the brand’s sales globally.

Mercedes-Benz Australia has issued a recall for the 2018 and 2019 model-year A-Class, C-Class and CLS model lines over concerns a software issue could cause vehicles to stall in stop/start traffic. Battery-electric vehicles would be allowed to do 130km/h in 80km/h zones, and 150km/h in 100km/h zones.
2020 Honda Jazz spied again
In these latest spy photos, the fourth-generation Honda Jazz doesn't look as if it will stray too far from the template laid out by earlier models. Our spy photography agency spied two prototypes undergoing testing in Europe. One is a regular hatch with a little bit less camouflage than the vehicle spied in September 2018.

2019 Subaru Forester 2.5i-L review
Cars can be excellent for a variety of reasons. Some feature innovative technology, some hit new highs in terms of handling or performance, while others, um, don’t do any of that yet are still excellent. Take the Subaru Forester, for example. It isn’t groundbreaking, forges no new high standard for tech or dynamics, yet as a balanced family all-rounder the Forester excels at being entirely unremarkable.

Anyone who buys a new car from a Top 10 brand will get at least five years factory-backed warranty from today. Almost driven: Aston Martin Valkyrie
Milton Keynes was a new town put onto green fields in the England midlands in the 1960s. The industrial estate where Red Bull Racing has its HQ is so generic it could be anywhere in the world. But this is where the Aston Martin Valkyrie is undergoing advanced testing, despite the fact it doesn’t physically exist yet.

The next-generation Mercedes-AMG CLA45 has been spied again, this time with a bit less disguise than previous prototypes we've seen. 2019 Kia Stinger GT: A drive day head-turner
The Kia Stinger constantly gets the comments section blazing on CarAdvice, with many questioning whether it stacks up as a proper replacement for the Aussie-built family sedans of yesteryear. 2019 Mini Cooper S review: Kensington Edition
Do you have a friend who's getting on a bit, packed on a few kilograms and become a bit... dull? You know, the sort who'll hibernate for months and then invite everyone out for 'the best night ever'. "How much fun is this?" they ask, sipping a craft beer. "We're having fun! Right? Right!?" The problem is, you usually aren't.
Audi RS3 production delayed, e-tron not expected until 2020
As the global effects of WLTP compliance come into play for manufacturers, some new and existing models have hit a snag, including the all-new Audi e-tron, for the Australian market. Originally slated to launch in Australia during 2019, the e-tron now won't launch locally until 2020 as Audi works through a backlog of WLTP compliance across its range of vehicles. The high-performance RS3 is suffering the same fate with production on hold until a WLTP compliant solution is in place.

2019 Hyundai Veloster N review
In this gotta-have-an-SUV market, we should be thankful that the new Hyundai Veloster N exists—whether or not it's any good. Scrappy little hatchbacks with stoked engines and Olympic-grade chassis are anything but a priority for manufacturers; they're following the money into the tall, boxy segments.

Audi is expected to offer the e-tron locally with the option of digital mirrors – the sleek and energy efficient mirrors that feature built-in high-resolution digital cameras in the place of mirrors. While the technology has been seen on countless concept cars, Audi is one of the few manufacturers on the market with the technology available on a production car.

2019 Hyundai Kona Electric long-term review: Introduction
I'm really, really excited about this one. Meet the latest long-termer through the CarAdvice Melbourne office, the Hyundai Kona Electric, in range-topping Highlander spec. Why the excitement? Because, despite skepticism from some of the motoring world, the idea of living with an electric car is really interesting. Is 450km of claimed range enough? Will we miss the roar of an internal combustion engine? Is charging a pain?

Destination Mount Panorama: The 2019 Lotus Drive Day
Lotus founder Colin Chapman built his first racing car in his garage in 1948, but it wasn't too long before the first Lotus factory was built, strangely, in old stables in North London. In those early days, Chapman ran Lotus in his free time, but by 1959, the Lotus Group of Companies was formed. Sixty years later, Chapman’s vision for an enthusiast's car has not diminished, never more evident than the recent 2019 Lotus Drive Day at Mount Panorama.

2019 Porsche 911 review
Despite the ever-growing demand for SUVs with a Porsche badge, the iconic German carmaker will now and forever be known for its halo model, the 911. Always has and always will, and it’s been that way since 1963. It’s the top of the tree and the definitive car by which all other models in the Porsche stable are benchmarked. Indeed, it’s still the universal benchmark for sports cars in general, regardless of the badge.

The Japanese brand reports affected vehicles could have ball joint casings in the front lower control arm that could crack over time, due to "an inappropriate production process". "Under high load conditions, the ball joint casing may break, which may cause the ball joint to detach from the lower arm," the company says in the recall notice.

As part of the company's global restructuring, Ford is exiting the Russian passenger car market, and closing many of its facilities there. Skoda's global division has added a new option package to the Octavia range overseas in similar to the new Sportline variant revealed earlier this week, dubbed the 'Dynamic+ package'. Where the Sportline is positioned as a standalone variant available with specific powertrains, the Dynamic+ pack is an add on for "most engine versions", and is a pretty clear indication of what's coming for the mildly-refreshed Octavia Sport in Australia.
2019 Holden Trailblazer Z71 review: Off-road
Like 4x4 utes, their wagon-shaped siblings have a tough gig. Along with being a safe, relaxing and competent family hauler, buyers are expecting them to be good off-road, torquey tow rigs. While having an all-purpose vehicle sounds appealing, you can wind up with something that’s a jack-of-all and master of none.
2020 Audi RS6 Avant spied
Audi's next-generation RS6 Avant has stepped for a development drive once again, headlined by a huge pair of exhaust pipes, flared guards and a suitably aggressive face. Snapped on a rainy day in Europe, the car doesn't deviate far from the playbook laid out by previous Audi Sport wagons, though is wearing a lot more camouflage than the vehicle spied in June last year. Up front, there's a gaping grille flanked by edgy air intakes, while the headlights follow in the footsteps of the regular A6.
Audi driving experience – the driving course you need to do
There's something really special about Phillip Island. It's one of the quickest race tracks you'll ever come across and if the pace doesn't make your heart flutter, the scenery certainly will. Throw some stupidly quick Audi RS models into the mix and you've got a smile inducing recipe for fun.

Photographers have snapped a largely uncamouflaged Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 prototype once again, this time doing laps at the famed Nurburgring circuit in Germany. In these latest images it appears the vehicle is pretty much production ready, with the only bits missing being the bagding at both ends. This vehicle also appears to be using the base-spec headlights, though we reckon they'd be swapped out for Porsche's flagship LED units with quad-cube signature for production.

2019 Aston Martin Vantage review
There are two very different ways you might approach reviewing a halo car. In this case, a re-imagined super sports car from a prestigious marque boasting one of the richest heritages in the game. For the all-new Aston Martin Vantage's international launch last year, Option A put resident brand fan-boi and Vantage owner Alborz Fallah (plus Anthony Crawford in tow for double measure) to the task, given he knows a thing or three about maker and model.
Honda NSX drags BMW M5 Competition, AMG E63 S - video
The Honda NSX should be faster than a BMW 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class, right? After all, it's a hybrid supercar, and the other two are 'just' four-door sedans. Of course, BMW and Mercedes-Benz have a knack for making their four-door sedans fast enough to scare supercars. With 460kW/760Nm and 450kW/800Nm respectively, the BMW M5 Competition and Mercedes-AMG E63 S are seriously quick.

"Production starts in the backend of 2020 for Q1 2021 launch," he said.
2019 Hyundai Ioniq Range Review
While battery tech remains expensive, the 2019 Hyundai Ioniq range of hybrid, plug-in hybrid EV and full EV models won't win any 'best budget buy' awards, but there is good value here nonetheless. Even the base models are well equipped, and the Hybrid is more affordable than the rival Prius. So, of the three variants, which should you consider?
2019 Ferrari P80/C: 'Most extreme' one-off revealed
Ferrari has whipped the covers off its latest, 'most extreme' one-off customer design yet, in the form of the retro-futuristic P80/C. Inspired by the 330 P3/P4 and 1966 Dino 206 S, development on the P80/C started in 2015, giving the car the longest gestation period of any one-off Ferrari. Rather than slapping a set of fresh body panels over the 488 GTB's base structure, the design team took a 488 GT3 and set about creating the track-ready weapon you see here.
Skoda Kodiaq ute concept coming
A team of student engineers from Skoda is prepping a load-lugging Kodiaq, but the car will remain a concept and nothing more. Based on the concept sketch pictured here, it'll gain a set of chunkier tyres and black, off-road ready wheels, along with a distinctive two-door design.
Smart's future to be decided before the end of 2019 - report
A report from Handelsblatt states Daimler, owner of the Mercedes-Benz and Smart marques, will decide the fate of the city car brand by the end of the year. The decisive moves will take place from May onwards, when Ola Kallenius, currently Daimler's head of research and development, takes over from Dieter Zetsche. While Zetsche has proven to be a keen and patient supporter of Smart, it looks possible Kallenius could pull the plug.

2019 Nissan Patrol Ti-L review
Remember when the Nissan Patrol was a back-to-basics, utilitarian off-roader? I do. My old man was always getting around in boxy GQ versions, and I remember family holidays in GUs during the late 1990s, which morphed into the Y61. It's no secret that today's iteration, which has been kicking around for the best part of a decade, is quite different. But then again, the 200 Series Toyota LandCruiser ain't much like the 80 Series either.
2018-19 Mercedes-Benz C-Class, E-Class, S-Class recalled
Mercedes-Benz has recalled a smattering of 2018 and 2019 C-Class, E-Class and S-Class models, over concerns about an issue with the seatbelt detection system. According to the company, it's possible affected cars will not register a correctly-engaged seatbelt. A warning light and tone will sound in the instrument cluster, and there's a risk the car's Pre-Safe system won't function.

Around the Tracks: F1 tyres, wagons vs SUVs, electric Bugatti
When we’re not creating it ourselves, the CarAdvice team spends a lot of time finding and consuming motoring content from all over the world. Here’s a handful of the articles, videos and social media posts that most caught our eye last week. Some of them are brand-new, others have been online for a while. Enjoy them – just not too much, okay? So much of Formula 1 comes down to tyres. Drivers are quick on fresh rubber, slow on old rubber, and... you get the idea.
Five fun, niche cars under $30k
For most people a car is a tool, an appliance intended for a logical purpose. Sure, they want cool tech, luxury features and a nice mix of ride comfort and zip, but it’s usually the more sensible elements like running costs, resale value, warranty, fuel economy, infotainment, space and safety that get them over the line.
2018 Mercedes-Benz S-Class recalled
Mercedes-Benz Australia has issued a recall for nine 2018 model-year S-Class sedans over concerns the Pre-Safe safety system may not engage even if a passenger is in the seat. Skoda Superb hits 500,000 units
Skoda has manufactured the 500,000th example of the third-generation Superb, with the milestone vehicle rolling down the production line at its Kvasiny facility in the Czech Republic this past week. The PSA Group reportedly approached Fiat Chrysler (FCA) about a merger as early as this year's Detroit motor show in January, only to be rebuffed by the American-Italian company. Sources have told The Wall Street Journal the offer was rejected by FCA, and talks about a possible combination have not recommenced. According to the paper's sources, senior executives at FCA kiboshed the proposal as it would it lead to the automaker being even more reliant on the European market.

2019 Kia Cerato GT hatch review
The Kia Cerato GT is a first for the brand – at the same time as being nothing new. It’s a first by virtue of being Kia’s first warm hatch that meets the demands of market trends, thanks to a five-door body and automatic transmission. It’s also nothing new, being Kia’s third tilt at success in the warm-something market after the two-door Cerato Koup Turbo and three-door manual-only Pro_cee’d GT before it.
2017-19 Alfa Romeo Stelvio and Giulia recalled
Alfa Romeo has recalled the Stelvio and Giulia, over concerns about the adaptive cruise control system. According to the company, some cars fitted with adaptive cruise control mightn't allow the driver to cancel in "very specific driving conditions". In some circumstances, the car could unexpectedly accelerate with adaptive cruise activated. If the driver doesn't apply the brakes, there's an increased risk of accident or injury, both for the driver and other road users.

What does the perfect driving position look like?
Given how much time we spend in our cars, getting your driving position right is important. It's also something of an inexact science, given each manufacturer sets up their cabins differently. Although it's a branded piece of YouTube content, this video from Jaguar takes an interesting walk through the key elements of a good driving position – even if the animated driver is wearing what appear to be fairly high heels. Check out the video below.
2018 Audi Q7 e-tron review
Brace yourself. There’s a windstorm of electric vehicles coming from the premium Germans in the next 12–24 months. Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and even Porsche will all be joining the EV road train and pushing electric mobility into the (premium) mainstream. Before then, though, the Germans have dabbled and dipped toes in beautifully cool and unpolluted waters by offering a range of plug-in hybrid vehicles to advertise their green credentials.
2019 BMW M2 CS spied

The new variant, which will sit above the M2 Competition in the range, is expected to offer 331kW when it launches later this year. That makes it around 30kW more powerful than the Comp, which itself is no slouch.

2019 Hyundai Elantra Active review
Hmmm… When was the last time we reviewed the Hyundai Elantra Active? That would, in fact, be the review I wrote, not much more than six months ago. Happens a lot at CarAdvice, where we churn through so many new cars, it’s easy to forget what you reviewed and when.
Jaguar Land Rover wins case against copycat Land Wind X7
The Beijing Chaoyang District Court has ruled the Land Wind X7 copied five unique features from the first-generation Range Rover Evoque. According to the court, similarities between the two cars caused confusion amongst consumers. The court has ordered production, sales and marketing of the Land Wind X7 to stop. It has also said Jaguar Land Rover should be compensated, although a figure has yet to be announced.
2020 Mercedes-AMG CLA45 spied
The next-generation Mercedes-AMG CLA45 has been spotted in snowy Europe this week, ahead of an anticipated reveal before the end of the year. Looking at this pre-production prototype, there's not a whole lot of surprises in terms of the design. The basic shape of the new CLA is there, but with beefed-up AMG bits. Up front is a more aggressive bumper and gaping Panamericana grille, while the rear sees a prominent diffuser treatment with a quad-tipped exhaust.
Checking out the Tesla Model Y - video
Tesla has finally rounded out its range, last week revealing the Model Y SUV in California. With the promise of a 480km range from the range-topper, looks heavily inspired by the Model 3, and a pared-back interior, it's very much a continuation on the theme laid out by previous Tesla models.
2019 Ram 1500 Rebel review
The image of enhanced off-road capability, both real and imagined, has long been a part of the full-size-pickup formula. That attribute continues with the new-for-2019 Ram 1500. Its redesigned lineup includes an update to the dirt-slingin' Rebel trim level that was introduced for 2015.

South Korea plans for hydrogen fuel-cell trucks to replace diesel by 2035
South Korea is seemingly set to require commercial vehicles in the country – including trucks and construction equipment – to use hydrogen fuel-cell drivetrains by 2035. The move is designed to counter “serious fine dust problems” in the country not helped by diesel emissions, according to The Korea Herald. The plan was apparently released by Transport Minister-nominee Choi Jeong-ho and Yoon Kwan-seok of the ruling Democratic Party of Korea.
2019 Ram 1500 pricing and specs
Ateco Australia has announced 2019 pricing and specs for the Ram 1500, which has gained a bolder new snout and some minor specification improvements for the new year. Although it's still the same 1500 we got before, not the all-new DT 1500 revealed at the 2018 Detroit motor show, the car has been given a new grille with more prominent badging at the front, and taller badging along the tailgate.

The Kona Electric Highlander costs $64,490. However, it's not quite apples for apples.

"A people mover needn’t be all about carting passengers – it ought to truly move you too,” said Ryan Davies, director for commercial vehicles at Volkswagen Australia.
2019 Hyundai Kona Electric review
Hyundai is determined to be an early leader in Australia’s EV market, having just added a second car powered by batteries alone. It’s the Kona Electric, and it joins the Ioniq hatch. The two Hyundai offerings and the soon-to-launch Nissan Leaf are the market’s three most appealing entry-level EVs, though many more will arrive in the next few years. They offer what constitutes affordable pricing for this still emerging technology.
Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio review: Quick track drive
You might wonder why CarAdvice was at an F1 track to test an SUV, but then you look at the numbers and it all becomes very clear. The 2019 Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio, or 'Stelvio Q' for short, is quite the piece of work. Let's take a look at those numbers now then... 1830kg, 2.9 litres, six cylinders, eight-speed gearbox, four-wheel drive, 375kW, 600Nm, 0–100km/h in 3.8 seconds, 283km/h top speed. You can see, then, why a racetrack was needed.
REVIEW: 2019 Hyundai Kona Electric hits Australia
Consider the Kona Electric as the fledgling EV market's proverbial 'clubhouse leader' at the segment's more affordable end, even if that only equates to a few hundred buyers this year. Hyundai is overall to be commended for being at the leading edge, and should benefit from this position in the years ahead.
Lynk & Co 01 L spied
Photographers have snapped the first images of a long-wheelbase Lynk & Co 01, ahead of an anticipated reveal later this year. 2019 Mini Cooper 5-Door manual review
Show a photo of a Mini to a person who could not care less about cars, and they will tell you instantly, it’s a Mini. Well, most people. The cute little car has inspired the miniskirt, a funny fella called Mr Bean drove one, and it has seen 28 people fit into one to break a Guinness World Record. So, it was no surprise that in 1999 it was voted the second most influential car of the 20th century.

2019 BMW X7 review
You could be forgiven for wondering why it has taken BMW so long to bring the 2019 BMW X7 to the European SUV party. Specifically, the high-end, luxury SUV party. It’s more like a free-for-all these days in the fiercely competitive new-car market. In a market like Australia, the notion of a free-for-all is even more apparent with large, luxury SUVs like the Audi Q7 selling like hotcakes, not to mention making significant inroads into the hire-car market at the same time.
REVIEW: BMW X7 first drive
it’s taken BMW a while to enter this segment, but as with most things BMW does, it has done so with aplomb.

The Kia Picanto has rightly been credited with revitalising the so-called 'micro car' segment, as its remarkable 69 per cent market share in 2018 shows. While rival brands such as Nissan (Micra), Holden (Spark) and Suzuki (Celerio) have all been compelled to axe their pint-sized competitors due to paltry sales, Kia has found a way to make its smallest car compelling to local buyers.

Water crossings aren’t to be taken lightly when you're off-road. If you don’t absolutely have to go through water, best not. The risks are high. Just a little water in the engine could mean a sleepover in the bush, an expensive retrieval and an even more expensive engine rebuild. The electronics in modern 4WD vehicles do not take kindly to water either, and your vehicle could turn into a hotbed of electrical gremlins for life.

Why Formula E matters
I grew up with motorsport, lived and breathed it all my life, a passion that culminated in working in the sport for two decades. I’ve been lucky enough to travel the world to watch motor racing, report on its heroes, covering everything from grassroots club racing to Formula 1. And everything in between. My passion knew, still knows, no boundaries. If it has an engine, and men and women strap themselves in in the pursuit of speed and the chequered flag, then colour me a fan.

2018 Renault Megane RS280 Cup manual review
Manual gearbox. Just two words, but it feels good to write them. Because whereas we couldn’t write about such a transmission with the Renault Sport Clio, we can talk about one with the new Megane RS. Renault Sport copped a fair amount of flak from enthusiasts (and, yes, media) for not providing a manual with its smallest pocket rocket, and perhaps that prompted the decision to offer both a self-shifter and an auto-shifter (for the first time) for the hot Megane.

2019 Nissan Altima review
Josh Jacquot • As ideas go, this one might not make automotive history, but it's the kind of thing we think about between rounds of office Plinko. Nissan could have executed the most accurate and brilliant car-branding plot in history when it named its sedans. Consider this: After the introduction of its big car, the Maxima, in 1981, a natural next step would have been to call its new small sedan for 1982 the Minima. Without consulting us, Nissan named it the Sentra.

How this new Bimmer fares as an all-rounder against the Audi A4 and Mercedes-Benz C-Class remains to be seen, but if the 3 Series brings with it the expectation of being the natural driver’s car to beat, this new version, in isolation at least, look to be more than capable of carrying the mantle and maintaining what many consider to be a hard-fought and well-earned reputation.

(It's still a fun ad, Ford). That means city driving is among the most important – if not the most important – considerations for buyers. Here's how the Ford Escape ST-Line stacks up in the urban jungle.

As with all Takata-related recalls, a combination of heat and humidity can make the airbag propellant degrade. If a car with a faulty inflator is involved in an accident, the metal inflator housing could rupture under too much pressure, sending metal fragments shooting into the cabin.

2019 Jaguar I-Pace EV400 SE review
It’s only a bit over a decade ago that Jaguar was desperately trying to overturn its fuddy-duddy, tweed-jacket image after years of stagnating design. Then up turned designer Ian Callum and the brand-redefining 2008 XF sedan. This time, Jaguar is not playing catch-up to its traditional German luxury-marque rivals. This time, Jaguar is taking the lead – in the fightback against electric-car start-up upstart Tesla.
2019 Jaguar I-Pace review
It’s incredible to think Jaguar turned the I-Pace around in just three-or-so years. That might have suggested it was being rushed to market just to make a statement. Yet not only does the I-Pace look like a Jaguar and drive like a Jaguar, it’s the brand’s stand-out model in more ways than one. Tesla is no longer the default choice for luxury-EV buyers.

The company says its next generation of SkyActiv engines will be able to extract at least an additional 30 per cent thermal efficiency over the just-launched SkyActiv X engine.

Just two weeks after Tesla announced it would close most of its stores and move to an online sales model, the electric car maker has reversed course. The move also allowed Tesla to introduce its much-anticipated US$35,000 ($50,000) entry-level Model 3 variant.
